Adsorbent materials are disclosed, along with filter elements containing the adsorbent materials methods of using adsorbents to remove siloxane contaminants from a gas stream. The method includes providing an adsorbent material that has been washed with an acid and passing a gas through the adsorbent material so as to reduce siloxane levels in the gas. A filter element for reducing siloxane levels in a gas includes a first adsorbent material, the first adsorbent material comprising an acid-washed adsorbent; and a second adsorbent material, the second adsorbent material comprising an acid-impregnated adsorbent.

We claim: 1. A filter element for reducing siloxane levels in a gas, the filter element comprising: a first adsorbent material, the first adsorbent material comprising an activated carbon impregnated with phosphoric acid; a second adsorbent material, the second adsorbent material comprising an activated carbon that has been acid-washed; and a third adsorbent material, the third adsorbent material comprising an activated carbon impregnated with phosphoric acid. 2. The filter element of claim 1 , wherein the filter element is configured for the gas to pass through the first adsorbent material, the second adsorbent material, and the third adsorbent material. 3. The filter element of claim 1 , wherein the filter element is configured for the gas to sequentially pass through the first adsorbent material, then the second adsorbent material, and then the third adsorbent material. 4. The filter element of claim 1 , wherein the second adsorbent material comprises an activated carbon that has been acid-washed with nitric acid. 5. The filter element of claim 1 , the filter element further comprising: an acid gas remover. 6. The filter element of claim 5 , wherein the acid gas remover is impregnated in a fourth adsorbent material. 7. The filter element of claim 6 , wherein the filter element is configured for the gas to pass through the fourth adsorbent material and to subsequently pass through the first adsorbent material, the second adsorbent material, and the third adsorbent material. 8. The filter element of claim 6 , wherein the filter element is configured for the gas to pass sequentially through the fourth adsorbent material, then the first adsorbent material, then the second adsorbent material, and then the third adsorbent material. 9. The filter element of claim 6 , wherein the fourth adsorbent material comprises activated carbon. 10. The filter element of claim 6 , wherein the acid gas remover comprises at least one of potassium iodide (KI), potassium carbonate (K 2 CO 3 ) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). 11. The filter element of claim 6 , wherein the acid gas remover comprises potassium iodide (KI) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). 12. A filter element for reducing siloxane levels in a gas, the filter element comprising: a first adsorbent material, the first adsorbent material comprising an activated carbon impregnated with potassium iodide (KI) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH); a second adsorbent material, the second adsorbent material comprising an activated carbon impregnated with phosphoric acid; a third adsorbent material, the third adsorbent material comprising an activated carbon that has been acid-washed; and a fourth adsorbent material, the fourth adsorbent material comprising an activated carbon impregnated with phosphoric acid. 13. The filter element of claim 12 , wherein the filter element is configured for the gas to pass through the first adsorbent material, the second adsorbent material, the third adsorbent material, and the fourth adsorbent material. 14. The filter element of claim 12 , wherein the filter element is configured for the gas to pass sequentially through the first adsorbent material, then the second adsorbent material, then the third adsorbent material, and then the fourth adsorbent material. 15.
