Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Certain embodiments of the present disclosure describe a frameless basketball backboard assembly and a method for producing a frameless basketball backboard assembly. A mounting structure is attached to one side of the backboard assembly, and a support assembly mounted to the backboard assembly connects the backboard assembly to a base. A rim may be added to a side of the backboard assembly by attaching to the support assembly.

What is claimed: 1. A method of mounting a basketball backboard assembly, the method comprising: pivotally attaching at least one upper attachment arm and at least one lower attachment arm to a substantially vertical support; pivotally attaching an attachment bracket to forward portions of said at least one upper attachment arm and said at least one lower attachment arm to form a deformable parallelogram assembly defined by said vertical support, said attachment bracket and said upper attachment arm and said lower attachment arm wherein the deformable parallelogram is adjustable to selectively allow the height of the attachment bracket to be modified; said attachment bracket defining a pair of pin openings on opposing lateral side portions of said attachment bracket, the pair of pin openings sharing a common axis; providing a backboard assembly, said backboard assembly defining a pair of pin support openings on opposing lateral side portions of said backboard assembly, the pair of pin support openings sharing a common axis; aligning said pair of pin openings on said attachment bracket on said attachment bracket with said pair of pin support openings on said backboard assembly; inserting a pair of pin supports through the aligned openings to mount said backboard assembly to said support assembly; and securing said backboard assembly to said attachment bracket with attachment members subsequent to inserting said pin supports, wherein each said attachment member extends from said attachment bracket and extends through an opening in a backboard panel of the backboard assembly. 2. The method of claim 1 , comprising: providing a rim assembly; and, securing the rim assembly to said backboard assembly and said attachment bracket in conjunction with securing said backboard assembly to the attachment bracket with said attachment members. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said attachment members are separate from said pin supports. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said attachment members are threaded. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the attachment members comprises four bolts. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said pin supports are cotter pins. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said attachment members are inserted from the rear side of the backboard assembly through corresponding openings in the backboard assembly so that portions of the attachment members protrude from the front of the backboard assembly, and comprising the step of securing the protruding portions of the attachment members to secure the backboard assembly to the attachment bracket. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein when said pin supports are inserted through the aligned openings the longitudinal axes of said pin supports are arranged parallel to a plane defined by said backboard panel. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein said pair of pin supports are axially aligned. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of said pin supports is inserted from an outer lateral side of said backboard assembly towards the center of said backboard assembly. 11. A method of mounting a basketball backboard assembly, the method comprising: providing an attachment bracket as part of a support assembly configured to connect to and support a backboard assembly and a rim assembly, said attachment bracket defining a plurality of pins openings on opposing lateral side portions of said attachment bracket, the pair of pin openings sharing a common axis; providing a backboard assembly defining a plurality of pin support openings on opposing lateral side portions of said backboard assembly, the pair of pin support openings sharing a common axis; aligning each pin opening on said attachment bracket with a corresponding pin support opening on said backboard assembly; inserting a pin support through each of the aligned openings and using said pin supports to mount said backboard assembly to said attachment bracket; and after said pin supports have been inserted, securing the backboard assembly to said attachment bracket using attachment members separate from said pin supports wherein each said attachment member extends from said attachment bracket and extends through an opening in a backboard panel of the backboard assembly. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the pin supports are cotter pins. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein said attachment members are threaded. 14. The method of claim 11 , wherein longitudinal axes of the pin supports are arranged perpendicular to longitudinal axes of the attachment members. 15. The method of claim 11 , comprising: providing a rim assembly; and, securing the rim assembly to said backboard assembly and said attachment bracket in conjunction with securing said backboard assembly to the attachment bracket with said attachment members. 16. The method of claim 11 , wherein each of said pin supports is inserted from an outer lateral side of said backboard assembly towards the center of said backboard assembly. 17. A method of mounting a basketball backboard assembly, the method comprising: providing an attachment bracket configured to connect to support a backboard assembly, said attachment bracket defining at least one pin opening; providing a backboard assembly with a backboard panel, said backboard assembly defining at least one pin support opening on a lateral side portion extending perpendicular to the backboard panel; aligning said at least one pin opening with said at least pin support opening; mounting said backboard assembly to said attachment bracket using a pin support passing through the aligned openings; and securing the backboard assembly to the attachment bracket using at least one attachment member separate from said pin support wherein said at least one attachment member extends from said attachment bracket through an opening in the backboard panel; wherein the longitudinal axis of the pin support is arranged perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the at least one attachment member. 18. The method of claim 17 , wherein said attachment bracket defines a plurality of pin openings, wherein said backboard assembly defines a plurality of pin support openings; and comprising the steps of aligning each pin opening with a corresponding pin support opening and arranging a pin support to pass through each pair of aligned openings. 19. The method of claim 17 , wherein once said backboard assembly is mounted to said attachment bracket using said at least one pin support, the attachment bracket supports the backboard assembly to enable an assembler to use both hands to complete assembly using said at least one attachment member.
