An intervertebral implant frame that is configured to engage a spacer can include a pair of arms that extend longitudinally from a support member such that the arms engage the spacer. The spacer can be made from bone graft, and include a first spacer body made of cortical bone, and a second spacer body made of cancellous bone.

What is claimed: 1. A method comprising the steps of: releasably coupling a first instrument arm of a first member of an expansion instrument to a first frame arm of an intervertebral implant frame, wherein the first member further includes a first base, and the first instrument arm extends from the first base; releasably coupling a second instrument arm of a second member of the expansion instrument to a second frame arm of the intervertebral implant frame, wherein the second member further includes a second base, and the second instrument arm extends from the second base; inserting the second base into a first gap of the first member that extends into the first base; and translating the second base relative to the first base in the first gap so as to cause the respective first and second frame arms to move away from each other. 2. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising the step of inserting a spacer body into the intervertebral implant frame after the translating step so as to define an intervertebral implant. 3. The method as recited in claim 2 , further comprising the step of implanting the implant in an intervertebral space along a lateral approach. 4. The method as recited in claim 2 , further comprising the step of implanting the implant in an intervertebral space along an anterior-posterior approach. 5. The method as recited in claim 2 , wherein the spacer body comprises: a cortical spacer body comprising a cortical bone graft material; and a cancellous spacer body comprising a cancellous bone graft material, the cancellous spacer body disposed proximal with respect to at least a portion of the cortical spacer body, wherein the spacer defines a proximal end that comprises the cancellous spacer body and none of the cortical spacer body, and a distal end that is spaced from the proximal end in a distal direction, the distal end comprising the cortical spacer body and none of the cancellous spacer body. 6. The method as recited in claim 5 , further comprising the step of engaging teeth of the first and second frame arms with the cortical spacer body after the inserting step. 7. The method as recited in claim 5 , further comprising the step of inserting a fixation element through a fixation element aperture that extends through a support member of the frame that extends between the first and second frame arms. 8. The method as recited in claim 7 , wherein the step of inserting the fixation element further comprises driving the fixation element through the cancellous spacer body and into a vertebra. 9. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising the step of pivoting the first and second bases with respect to each other about a pivot location, wherein the pivot location translates during the translating step. 10. The method as recited in claim 9 , further comprising the step of stopping the translating step when the second base contacts a first stop wall that at least partially defines the first gap. 11. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising the step of inserting the first member into a second gap of the second member that extends into the second base. 12. The method as recited in claim 11 , further comprising the step of pivoting the first and second bases with respect to each other about a pivot location so as to move the first and second frame arms away from each other, wherein the pivot location translates as the second and first bases translate relative to each other in the first and second gaps, respectively. 13. The method as recited in claim 12 , further comprising the step of moving first and second handle portions of the first and second members, respectively, toward each other so as to cause the first and second bases to translate within the second and first gaps, respectively, thereby moving the first and second frame arms away from each other. 14. The method as recited in claim 12 , wherein the first and second steps of releasably coupling comprise coupling first and second dovetailed gripping portions of the first and second instrument arms, respectively, to the first and second frame arms, respectively. 15. The method as recited in claim 14 , wherein the step of coupling the first and second dovetailed gripping portions comprises inserting the first and second dovetailed gripping portions into respective dovetail slots of the first and second frame arms, respectively. 16. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the translating step causes the first and second frame arms to elastically deflect away from each other a sufficient distance such that the frame receives the intervertebral spacer.
