Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A point-of-sale terminal that generates a radio frequency (RF) field through a flat panel display and touchscreen is disclosed. The point of sale device includes a touchscreen, a display positioned behind the touchscreen, and an antenna located behind the display. The antenna can be entirely within the lateral extent of the touchscreen. The antenna can be mounted to the display via a layer of adhesive or mounted to a support frame. The antenna generates the RF field above the touchscreen.

What is claimed is: 1. A payment device that generates a radio frequency field, comprising: a touchscreen; a display positioned behind the touchscreen; an antenna: (i) positioned behind the display; (ii) located entirely within a lateral extent of the touchscreen; and (iii) configured to generate the radio frequency field above the touchscreen; a layer of adhesive: (i) located between the antenna and the display; (ii) in direct physical contact with both the antenna and the display; (iii) that mounts the antenna to the display; and (iv) having at least two separate adhesive segments; and wherein the at least two separate adhesive segments define an air gap formed by a break in the layer of adhesive. 2. The payment device of claim 1 , wherein: the display has a diagonal greater than or equal to four inches. 3. The payment device of claim 2 , further comprising: a support frame positioned underneath the antenna; wherein the support frame is metal. 4. The payment device of claim 2 , further comprising: a processor; a memory; and a housing enclosing the antenna, the processor, and the memory; wherein the antenna is located between the display and the processor. 5. The payment device of claim 4 , wherein: the display, touchscreen, and antenna are all centered along a lengthwise extent of the housing. 6. The payment device of claim 4 , further comprising: a support frame positioned underneath the antenna; wherein the support frame is a midframe; and wherein the support frame provides rigidity to the housing. 7. The payment device of claim 4 , wherein: the antenna is a short-range antenna; and the display is a volatile display. 8. The payment device of claim 7 , wherein: the antenna is a near field communication antenna; the touchscreen is a capacitive touch screen; and the memory stores instructions for conducting a short-range wireless payment communication involving the radio frequency field. 9. The payment device of claim 8 , wherein: the radio frequency field extends at least four centimeters from a top surface of the touchscreen. 10. A payment device that generates a radio frequency field, comprising: a touchscreen; a display having a first side in direct contact with the touchscreen; an antenna that generates the radio frequency field above the touchscreen; a layer of adhesive: (i) located between the antenna and the display; (ii) in direct physical contact with both the antenna and the display; (iii) that mounts the antenna to a second side of the display; and (iv) having at least two separate adhesive segments; wherein the at least two separate adhesive segments define an air gap formed by a break in the layer of adhesive; and a memory that stores instructions for conducting a short-range wireless payment communication involving the radio frequency field; wherein the radio frequency field implements the short-range wireless payment communication at a distance of at least four centimeters from a top surface of the touchscreen. 11. The payment device of claim 10 , wherein: the display has a diagonal greater than or equal to four inches. 12. The payment device of claim 11 , further comprising: a support frame positioned underneath the antenna; wherein the support frame is metal. 13. The payment device of claim 11 , further comprising: a processor; a memory; and a housing enclosing the antenna, the processor, and the memory; wherein the antenna is located between the display and the processor. 14. The payment device of claim 13 , wherein: the display, touchscreen, and antenna are all centered along a lengthwise extent of in the housing. 15. The payment device of claim 13 , further comprising: a support frame positioned underneath the antenna; wherein the support frame is a midframe; and wherein the support frame provides rigidity to the housing. 16. The payment device of claim 13 , wherein: the antenna is a short-range antenna; and the display is a volatile display. 17. The payment device of claim 16 , wherein: the antenna is a near field communication antenna; the touchscreen is a capacitive touch screen; and the memory stores instructions for conducting a short-range wireless payment communication involving the radio frequency field. 18. The payment device of claim 17 , wherein: the antenna is oriented such that: (i) a portion of the radio frequency field is generated within a lateral extent of the touchscreen; and (ii) a second portion of the radio frequency field is generated within a lateral extent of a top surface of the housing. 19. The payment device of claim 17 , wherein: the antenna is located entirely within a lateral extent of the touchscreen; and the radio frequency field is only effective within a lateral extent of the touchscreen. 20. A payment device that generates a radio frequency field, comprising: a touchscreen; a display positioned behind the touchscreen; an antenna that: (i) is positioned behind the display; (ii) is mounted to a portion of a support frame; (iii) generates the radio frequency field above the touchscreen; and a layer of adhesive; an air gap formed by a break in the layer of adhesive and located between the antenna and the display; wherein the support frame is positioned behind the antenna; and wherein at least two separate adhesive segments define the air gap. 21. The payment device from claim 20 , wherein: the display has a diagonal greater than or equal to four inches. 22. The payment device of claim 21 , wherein: the antenna is oriented such that: (i) a portion of the radio frequency field is generated within a lateral extent of the touchscreen; and (ii) a second portion of the radio frequency field is generated within a lateral extent of a top surface of the housing. 23. The payment device of claim 21 , wherein: the antenna is located entirely within a lateral extent of the touchscreen; and the radio frequency field is only effective within a lateral extent of the touchscreen. 24.
