Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

This invention discloses apparatus for generating an ophthalmic lens with at least a portion of one surface free-formed from a Reactive Mixture. In some embodiments, an ophthalmic lens is formed on a substrate with an arcuate optical quality surface via a source of actinic radiation controllable to cure a definable portion of a volume of Reactive Mixture.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

The invention claimed is: 1. A Lens Precursor defined by first and second opposing surfaces, comprising a non-fluent first portion comprised of polymeric material cross-linked beyond a gel point, and defined by a first side having a concave optical quality surface and a second opposing side, wherein the first side defines the first surface of the Lens Precursor; and a second portion comprising a Fluent Lens Reactive Media extending over at least a portion of the second side of the first potion, wherein an exposed surface of the Fluent Lens Reactive Media forms the second surface of the Lens Precursor, and wherein the second surface has a convex shape and is of optical quality. 2. The Lens Precursor according to claim 1 , wherein the Lens Precursor is adapted to be converted to a contact lens suitable for use in humans when the exposed surface of the Fluent Lens Reactive Media is exposed to actinic radiation to thereby polymerize the Fluent Lens Reactive Media. 3. The Lens Precursor according to claim 1 , wherein the non-fluent first portion is comprised of the same material as the Fluent Lens Reactive Media. 4. The Lens Precursor according to claim 1 , wherein the non-fluent first portion is comprised of a different material than the Fluent Lens Reactive Media. 5. The Lens Precursor according to claim 1 , wherein the Fluent Lens Reactive Media is comprised of the same material as the non-fluent first portion and an added solvent. 6. The Lens Precursor according to claim 1 , wherein the Fluent Lens Reactive Media is comprised of the same material as the non-fluent first portion and an added surfactant. 7. The Lens Precursor according to claim 1 , wherein the Fluent Lens Reactive Media is comprised of the same material as the non-fluent first portion and an additive that alters a surface energy of the Fluent Lens Reactive Media. 8. The Lens Precursor according to claim 1 , wherein the first portion is comprised of Fluent Lens Reactive Media polymerized on a voxel-by-voxel basis using actinic radiation. 9. The Lens Precursor according to claim 1 , wherein the first portion is formed by cast molding. 10. The Lens Precursor according to claim 1 , wherein the first portion is formed using stereolithography. 11. The Lens Precursor according to claim 1 , wherein the first portion is formed using masked based stereolithography.
