An apparatus for providing rods for use in the manufacture of cigarette filter elements, each rod having individual objects placed at predetermined spaced intervals along the length thereof, comprises means for providing a continuous supply of rod filter material, a first hopper means for providing a reservoir for objects, and a second hopper means for providing a plurality of individual objects. The second hopper means is positioned to receive objects from the first hopper means. The apparatus also comprises a reciprocating screen means between the first hopper means and the second hopper means, means for positioning individual objects from the second hopper to within the supply of filter material at pre-determined spaced intervals, means for forming the filter material into a continuous rod having individual objects positioned at pre-determined spaced intervals within that rod, and means for subdividing the continuous rod at pre-determined intervals.

What is claimed is: 1. An apparatus for providing rods for use in the manufacture of cigarette filter elements, each rod having individual objects placed at predetermined spaced intervals along the length thereof, the apparatus comprising: (a) means for providing a continuous supply of rod filter material; (b) an upper hopper including a reservoir for individual, solid objects; (c) a lower hopper in communication with the upper hopper whereby the lower hopper is positioned to receive a plurality of individual, solid objects from the upper hopper; (d) means for individually positioning each of the plurality of individual, solid objects from the lower hopper to within the supply of filter material at pre-determined spaced intervals; (e) means for forming the filter material into a continuous rod having individual objects positioned at pre-determined spaced intervals within that rod; (f) means for subdividing the continuous rod at pre-determined intervals. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for providing a continuous supply of wrapping material; and the means for forming the filter material into a continuous rod including a garniture means for continuously forming the wrapping material around the filter material. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising ejection means for assuring ejection of each individual, solid object into the filter material. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the upper hopper feeds objects to the lower hopper by way of gravity feed. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a lower level sensor on the lower hopper positioned to detect when objects therein drop below a first position, and an upper level sensor on the lower hopper positioned to detect when objects fill above a second position. 6. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a controller in communication with the lower level sensor and the upper level sensor wherein, the controller is to apply a mechanical frequency between 0.5 Hz and 2000 Hz when the level of objects within the lower hopper are detected to be below the first position and to cause to turn off or reduce the mechanical frequency when the level of objects within the lower hopper is above a second position. 7. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a controller in communication with the lower level sensor and the upper level sensor, wherein the controller operates a vibrating unit intermittently to maintain the level of objects in the lower hopper between the first and second positions, the vibrating unit coupled with the upper hopper. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the lower hopper has a front-to-back depth to maintain spherical objects disposed therein vertically stacked as a single layer depth. 9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the upper hopper has a wedge shape, whereby the upper region of the upper hopper has a relatively greater cross-sectional area, and the lower region of the upper hopper has a relatively smaller cross-sectional area. 10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the lower region of the upper hopper has a front-to-back depth to maintain spherical objects disposed therein in a vertical plane approaching a single layer depth at the bottom of the upper hopper. 11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the individual, solid objects are breakable. 12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the individual, solid objects are spherical. 13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the individual, solid objects are liquid-containing objects.
