Official abstract text for this publication.
A surgical device is provided that includes a jaw portion, having a first jaw in opposed correspondence with a second jaw, the second jaw including a surgical member. The surgical device may include a shaft portion coupled to a proximal end of the jaw portion and at least one motor configured to rotate the jaw portion relative to the shaft portion, to move the jaw portion relative to the shaft portion, move the first jaw relative to the second jaw and move the surgical member within the second jaw. The surgical member may be prevented from moving within the second jaw unless the first jaw is in a closed position relative to the second jaw. Advantageously, the surgical member may include one or both a cutting element or a stapling element, disposed within one of the jaws.

The invention claimed is: 1. A surgical device, comprising: an elongate shaft assembly; a drive system for applying a plurality of rotary control motions to the elongate shaft assembly; a first gear train having a first gear element arrangement including a first pair of gear elements operably interfacing with a second gear element; and a second gear train having a second gear element arrangement including a second pair of gear elements operably interfacing with a third gear element; wherein at least one of the second or third gear elements defines a central axis coaxial with a pivot axis around which at least one of a first jaw or a second jaw pivots relative to the elongate shaft assembly, the first and second jaws positioned on a distal end of the elongate shaft assembly. 2. The surgical device according to claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the elongate shaft assembly includes a first jaw, and a second jaw disposed in opposed correspondence relative to the first jaw. 3. The surgical device according to claim 2 , wherein the elongate shaft assembly defines a longitudinal axis therethrough that is perpendicular to a pivot axis defined by a pin extending through at least one of the first gear train or the second gear train. 4. The surgical device according to claim 3 , wherein the drive system includes: a first driver coupled to a first rotatable drive shaft, the first driver configured to move the first jaw relative to the second jaw; and a second driver coupled to a second rotatable drive shaft, the second driver configured to drive a cutting and stapling element included in the second jaw. 5. The surgical device according to claim 4 , wherein the first gear train meshingly engages with the first rotatable drive shaft and the second gear train meshingly engages with the second rotatable drive shaft. 6. The surgical device according to claim 5 , wherein actuation of at least one of the first and second gear trains actuates a rotation of the first and second jaws relative to the longitudinal axis defined by the elongate shaft assembly. 7. The surgical device according to claim 6 , further comprising a wedge member mechanically cooperating with a wedge driver, the wedge driver being actuated by one of the first gear train or the second gear train upon an actuation thereof. 8. The surgical device according to claim 7 , wherein a displacement of the first jaw relative to the second jaw, and a displacement of the wedge member is a function of a rotation of the first and second rotatable drive shafts. 9. The surgical device according to claim 1 , wherein the first gear arrangement is rotatably mounted about a pin defining a pivot axis. 10. The surgical device according to claim 1 , wherein the second gear arrangement is rotatably mounted about a pin defining a pivot axis. 11. The surgical device according to claim 1 , wherein the first gear element arrangement is actuatable by a first rotatable drive shaft and the second gear element arrangement is actuatable by a second rotatable drive shaft, to position the first jaw relative to the second jaw. 12. A surgical device, comprising: an elongate shaft assembly; a drive system for applying a plurality of rotary control motions to the elongate shaft assembly; a first gear train having a first gear element arrangement including a first pair of gear elements operably interfacing with a second gear element; and a second gear train having a second gear element arrangement including a second pair of gear elements operably interfacing with a third gear element; wherein the second gear element is perpendicular to the first pair of gear elements and the third gear element is perpendicular to the second pair of gear elements. 13. The surgical device according to claim 12 , wherein a pin is secured through the second and third gear elements such that the second gear element is transverse to the third gear element. 14. A surgical device, comprising: an elongate shaft assembly; a first jaw, and a second jaw disposed in opposed correspondence relative to the first jaw, the first and second jaws attached at a distal end of the elongate shaft assembly; a drive system for applying a plurality of rotary control motions to the elongate shaft assembly, the drive system including a first driver coupled to a first rotatable drive shaft and a second driver coupled to a second rotatable drive shaft, wherein the first driver moves the first jaw relative to the second jaw, and the second driver drives a cutting and stapling element included in the second jaw; a first gear element arrangement including a first gear element, a second gear element, and a third gear element, where the first and second gear elements meshingly engage with the third gear element; and a second gear element arrangement including a fourth gear element, a fifth gear element, and a sixth gear element, where the fourth and fifth gear elements meshingly engage with the sixth gear element; wherein at least one of the first gear element arrangement or the second gear element arrangement is rotatably mounted about a pin. 15. The surgical device according to claim 14 , wherein actuation of at least one of the first and second gear element arrangements actuates a rotation of the first and second jaws relative to a longitudinal axis defined by the elongate shaft assembly. 16. The surgical device according to claim 14 , wherein the first gear element is disposed in opposed correspondence relative to the second gear element, such that the first and second gear elements are transverse to each other; and wherein the fourth gear element is disposed in opposed correspondence relative to the fifth gear element, such that the fourth and fifth gear elements are transverse to each other. 17. The surgical device according to claim 16 , wherein the third gear element of the first gear element arrangement is transverse to the sixth gear element of the second gear element arrangement. 18. The surgical device according to claim 17 , wherein the pin is secured through the third gear element of the first gear element arrangement and the sixth gear element of the second gear element arrangement.
