Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Lighting units, lighting systems, and methods are described herein for automatic and decentralized commissioning of a replacement lighting unit ( 140, 150, 250 ). In various embodiments, a replacement lighting unit may receive, from one or more remote lighting units over one or more communication networks, one or more identifiers associated with the one or more remote lighting units. The replacement lighting unit may also receive, from at least one of the one or more remote lighting units over the one or more communication networks, the lighting operation parameters associated with an inoperative lighting unit. The replacement lighting unit may then selectively energize one or more light sources ( 258 ) associated with the replacement lighting unit to emit light having one or more properties indicated in the lighting operation parameters associated with the inoperative lighting unit.

We claim: 1. A system for commissioning one or more luminaires in a physical structure, the system comprising: a memory configured to store information about the one or more luminaires; a commissioning module configured to: (i) localize a luminaire to be commissioned to a location within the physical structure; and (ii) associate the localized luminaire with one or more other luminaires in the physical structure, wherein the associated luminaires are configured to operate according to one or more parameters; and a commissioning tool in communication with the commissioning module and configured to: (i) associate a controller or sensor to the localized luminaire; (ii) link the associated luminaires together in the memory, wherein the linked associated luminaires are configured such that operation of the localized luminaire affects operation of another luminaire of the associated luminaires; and (iii) configure the one or more parameters. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to utilize coded light to localize the luminaire to a location within the physical structure. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein localizing a luminaire to be commissioned to a location within the physical structure comprises associating the luminaire to a room within the structure. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the commissioning module is further configured to associate the localized luminaire with a function. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more parameters comprise a trigger internal to the localized luminaire or a trigger external to the localized luminaire. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the associated luminaires are further configured to operate according to a hierarchy within the physical structure. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the commissioning module is further configured to assign a template to the localized luminaire. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the commissioning module is configured to associate the localized luminaire with one or more other luminaires in the physical structure based on one or more predetermined rules. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the commissioning module is configured to associate the localized luminaire with one or more other luminaires in the physical structure based on a predetermined design. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the commissioning tool is configured to associate multiple controllers or sensors to the commissioned localized luminaire. 11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the commissioning tool is configured to associate a sensor with multiple commissioned luminaires. 12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more parameters comprise a default behavior of a commissioned localized luminaire. 13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the commissioning tool is further configured to: (i) create a template for the localized luminaire, wherein the template comprises one or more parameters of the localized luminaire; and (ii) assign the created template to the localized luminaire. 14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is a light sensor or an occupancy sensor. 15. A method for commissioning one or more luminaires in a physical structure using a commissioning module and a commissioning tool, the method comprising the steps of: localizing, using the commissioning module, a luminaire to be commissioned to a location within the physical structure; commissioning, using the commissioning module, the localized luminaire by associating with localized luminaire with one or more other luminaires in the physical structure, wherein the associated luminaires are configured to operate according to one or more parameters; associating, using the commissioning tool, one or more controllers or sensors to the commissioned localized luminaire; linking, using the commissioning tool, the associated luminaires together in a memory, wherein the linked associated luminaires are configured such that operation of the localized luminaire affects operation of another luminaire of the associated luminaires; and configuring, using the commissioning tool, the one or more parameters. 16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising the steps of: creating, using the commissioning tool, a template for the localized luminaire, wherein the template comprises one or more parameters of the localized luminaire; and assigning the created template to the localized luminaire. 17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising the steps of: associating, using the commissioning module, a function with the localized luminaire. 18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the associated luminaires are configured to operate according to a hierarchy within the physical structure. 19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the one or more parameters comprise a default behavior of a commissioned localized luminaire. 20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the commissioning module is configured to associate the localized luminaire with one or more other luminaires in the physical structure based on one or more predetermined rules.
