LED light bulbs include openings in base or cover portions, and optional forced flow elements, for convective cooling. Thermally conductive optically transmissive material may be used for cooling, optionally including fins. A LED light engine may be fabricated from a substrate via planar fabrication techniques and shaped to form a substantially rigid upright support structure. Mechanical, electrical, and thermal connections may be made between a LED light engine and a LED light bulb.

What is claimed is: 1. A light emitting diode (LED) light bulb comprising: a base end including a plurality of electrical contacts arranged to mate with an electrical receptacle to receive electric current; a distal end arranged distal from the base end; a plurality of LEDs; and a circuit board arranged to support the plurality of LEDs between the base end and the distal end, wherein the circuit board is in electrical communication with the plurality of LEDs and a coating comprising an electrically insulating material disposed over the circuit board, and wherein the plurality of LEDs is mounted to the circuit board. 2. The LED light bulb of claim 1 , further comprising a cover comprising a light-transmissive material and defining an interior volume, wherein the plurality of LEDs and at least a portion of the circuit board are arranged within the interior volume. 3. The LED light bulb of claim 2 , further comprising a plurality of openings defined in the cover to enable air or other fluid to flow between the interior volume and an ambient environment. 4. The LED light bulb of claim 3 , further comprising an electrically activated fluid circulation element arranged to circulate air or other fluid to flow through the plurality of openings. 5. The LED light bulb of claim 3 , further comprising at least one baffle disposed proximate to at least one opening of the plurality of openings and configured to prevent unobstructed visibility of the plurality of LEDs through the at least one opening. 6. The LED light bulb of claim 5 , wherein the cover and the at least one baffle are arranged to diffuse light emissions of the plurality of LEDs. 7.
