Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A microfluidic distributing device having a plurality of microchannels for the analysis of a fluid sample (such as blood). The microfluidic distributing device has a fluid sample entry port from which subsamples of the fluid sample are distributed to the plurality of microchannels in which fluid subsamples are treated for analysis by test devices.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method of treating a plurality of fluid subsamples, comprising: introducing a fluid sample into a microfluidic analysis system, the microfluidic analysis system comprising a microfluidic distributing device and a plurality of test devices, wherein the fluid sample is introduced into a fluid sample entry port of the microfluidic distributing device, the microfluidic distributing device containing a base portion having the fluid sample entry port for receiving the fluid sample, a plurality of fluid flow microchannels in fluid communication with the fluid sample entry port such that the fluid sample received in the fluid sample entry port is separated into a plurality of fluid subsamples, and a plurality of fluid subsample exit ports, each of the fluid subsample exit ports in fluid communication with a corresponding one of the microchannels, wherein each of the microchannels has a valve disposed therein for controlling flow of the fluid subsample through the microchannel, and a reagent area with a reagent for reacting on or with the fluid subsample passing through the microchannel; dividing the fluid sample into a plurality of fluid subsamples and distributing the fluid subsamples into the microchannels of the microfluidic distributing device to dispose a fluid subsample within each microchannel, wherein the fluid subsample is treated by reaction with the reagent in the reagent area of the microchannel to form a reacted fluid subsample and wherein at least a portion of the reacted fluid subsample is passed through the exit port of the microchannel into one of the plurality of test devices, wherein each of the plurality of test devices is in fluid communication with a separate exit port of the microfluidic distributing device to receive and analyze the fluid subsample received from the corresponding exit port and further wherein the plurality of test devices are arranged so that the microfluidic distributing device is moveable to selectively engage each of the plurality of test devices; analyzing the reacted fluid subsample via selectively utilizing the plurality of test devices. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the fluid subsamples is further subdivided before reaching the reagent area. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein each fluid subsample is treated with a different reagent. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the fluid sample is a blood sample. 5. The method of claim 3 , wherein at least one fluid subsample of the blood sample is hemolyzed. 6. The method of claim 3 , wherein at least one fluid subsample of the blood sample is exposed to an anticoagulant and tested as a whole blood sample. 7. The method of claim 3 , wherein at least one fluid subsample of the blood sample is treated to form plasma from the fluid subsample. 8. The method of claim 3 , wherein the fluid subsample is coagulated to form a serum which is reacted with the reagent in the reagent area.
