A lancet device including a housing and a lancet structure having a puncturing element. The lancet structure disposed within the housing and adapted for movement between a retaining or pre-actuated position wherein the puncturing element is retained within the housing, and a puncturing position wherein the puncturing element extends through a forward end of the housing. The lancet device includes a drive spring disposed within the housing for biasing the lancet structure toward the puncturing position, and a retaining hub retaining the lancet structure in the retracted position against the bias of the drive spring. The retaining hub includes a pivotal lever in interference engagement with the lancet structure. An actuator within the housing pivots the lever, thereby moving the lancet structure toward the rearward end of the housing to at least partially compress the drive spring, and releasing the lever from interference engagement with the lancet structure.

The invention claimed is: 1. A lancet device, comprising: a housing; a shield coaxially and movably associated with the housing; a puncturing element disposed within the housing and adapted for movement between a pre-actuated position wherein the puncturing element is retained within the housing and a puncturing position wherein the puncturing element extends through a forward end of the housing; and a removable sterile tab member associated with the shield, wherein the shield is movably associated with the housing to move from a first position extending outward from the housing to a second position at least partially retracted into the housing and wherein the sterile tab member comprises a closed distal surface and a depending hollow skirt protruding proximally relative to the distal surface, the depending hollow skirt at least partially encompassing the shield such that a distal lip of the depending hollow skirt contacts a terminal surface of the shield and a terminal proximal surface of the depending hollow skirt contacts a terminal surface of the housing to prevent axial movement of the shield relative to the housing and to enclose a forward opening of the housing with the depending hollow skirt and a forward opening of the shield with the distal surface of the tab member. 2. The lancet device of claim 1 , wherein the housing defines at least one finger grip indentation, and wherein the at least one finger grip indentation comprises a concave surface shape facing substantially transversely away from an axis passing axially through the puncture element. 3. The lancet device of claim 2 , wherein the concave surface shape is chosen from the group consisting of a semicircle, an ellipse, a hyperbola, and a parabola. 4. The lancet device of claim 2 , further comprising a second opposed finger grip indentation, and wherein a substantially horizontal longitudinal plane passing substantially centrally through the housing is approximately equidistant between the finger grip indentations. 5. The lancet device of claim 4 , wherein the finger grip indentations are bilaterally symmetric about the horizontal longitudinal plane. 6. The lancet device of claim 1 , wherein the tab member is spaced a distance from the puncturing element. 7. A lancet device comprising: a housing; a lancet structure comprising a puncturing element, the lancet structure disposed within the housing and adapted for movement between a pre-actuated position wherein the puncturing element is retained within the housing and a puncturing position wherein the puncturing element extends through a forward end of the housing; a sterile tab member extending distally from the puncturing element and protecting the puncturing element prior to use; a drive spring disposed within the housing for biasing the lancet structure toward the puncturing position; and a shield extending through the forward end of the housing and axially movable with respect to the housing, wherein the tab member is removably associated with the shield and comprises a closed distal surface and a depending hollow skirt protruding relative to the distal surface, the depending hollow skirt at least partially encompassing the shield such that a distal lip of the depending hollow skirt contacts a terminal surface of the shield and a terminal proximal surface of the depending hollow skirt contacts a terminal surface at a distal end of the housing to prevent axial movement of the shield relative to the housing that would cause the drive spring to bias the lancet structure to the puncturing position and to enclose a forward opening of the housing with the depending hollow skirt and a forward opening of the shield with the distal surface of the tab member. 8. The lancet device of claim 7 , wherein the tab member comprises a proximal portion associated with the puncturing element and a distal portion adapted to be grasped by a user of the lancet device, the proximal portion comprising the depending hollow skirt. 9. The lancet device of claim 8 , wherein the distal portion comprises a paddle-shaped member adapted to be grasped by a user of the lancet device. 10. The lancet device of claim 8 , wherein the proximal portion is removably connected to the distal portion. 11. The lance device of claim 8 , wherein the housing and shield each define at least one peripheral indentation directed toward a discharge opening of the shield to facilitate aiming of the lancet device at an intended puncture site on the body of a human or animal. 12. The lancet device of claim 7 , wherein the skirt is adapted to fully enclose the shield therein, and wherein the shield is frictionally held within the skirt. 13. The lancet device of claim 7 , wherein the tab member is spaced a distance from the puncturing element. 14. The lancet device of claim 7 , wherein the housing defines at least one finger grip indentation, and wherein the at least one finger grip indentation comprises a concave surface shape facing substantially transversely away from an axis passing axially through the puncture element. 15. The lancet device of claim 14 , further comprising a second opposed finger grip indentation, and wherein a substantially horizontal longitudinal plane passing substantially centrally through the housing is approximately equidistant between the finger grip indentations. 16. The lancet device of claim 15 , wherein the finger grip indentations are bilaterally symmetric about the horizontal longitudinal plane. 17. A lancet device, comprising: a housing defining at least one finger grip indentation; a shield coaxially and movably associated with the housing; a second opposed finger grip indentation; a puncturing element disposed within the housing and adapted for movement between a pre-actuated position wherein the puncturing element is retained within the housing and a puncturing position wherein the puncturing element extends through a forward end of the housing; and a removable sterile tab member associated with a puncturing element disposed in the housing, and wherein the shield is movably associated with the housing to move from a first position extending outward from the housing to a second position at least partially retracted into the housing, wherein the sterile tab member comprises a closed distal surface and a depending hollow skirt protruding relative to the distal surface, the depending hollow skirt at least partially encompassing the shield such that a distal lip of the depending hollow skirt contacts a terminal surface of the shield and a terminal proximal surface of the depending hollow skirt contacts a terminal surface of the housing to prevent axial movement of the shield relative to the housing and to enclose a forward opening of the housing with the depending hollow skirt and a forward opening of the shield with the distal surface of the tab member, and wherein the at least one finger grip indentation comprises a concave surface shape facing substantially transversely away from an axis passing axially through the puncture element and wherein a substantially horizontal longitudinal plane passing substantially centrally through the housing is approximately equidistant between the finger grip indentations. 18.
