A process of living ring-opening polymerization comprising the step of exposing α-amino acid N-carboxyanhydride monomers to an initiator having a formula NH 2 CH 2 [CH 2 NHCH 2 ]nCH 2 NH 2 , wherein n is an integer with value of 1-3 to obtain amino acid polymers, including homopolymers or block copolymers. Use of triethylenetetramine, diethylenetriamine and tetraethylenepentamine exemplified. Representative examples of block copolymers include poly(benzyl-L-glutamate) and poly(benzyl-L-lysine).

What is claimed is: 1. A process for living ring-opening polymerization comprising exposing an α-amino acid N-carboxyanhydride monomers to an initiator having a formula NH 2 CH 2 [CH 2 NHCH 2 ]nCH 2 NH 2 , wherein n is an integer with value of 1-3 to form an amino acid polymer. 2. The process of claim 1 , wherein the initiator is selected from the group consisting of triethylenetetramine, diethylenetriamine, tetraethylenepentamine, and combinations thereof. 3. The process of claim 1 , wherein the amino acid polymer is a homopolymer. 4. The process of claim 1 , comprising polymerizing a mixture of different α-amino acid N-carboxyanhydride monomers to form the amino acid polymer. 5. The process of claim 1 , wherein the amino acid polymer comprises a block copolymer. 6. The process of claim 5 , wherein the block copolymer comprises poly(benzyl-L-glutamate) and poly(benzyl-L-lysine).
