Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A headrest assembly includes a linkage system that is at least partially disposed within a housing. The linkage system is operable between fore and aft positions relative to the housing. An adjustable cover assembly includes a first member coupled to the linkage system for movement therewith, and a second member pivotally coupled to the first member. The second member includes an engagement flange configured to contact a portion of the housing to pivot the second member rearwardly as the adjustable cover assembly is driven outward by the linkage system during the positioning of a headrest bun.

We claim: 1. A headrest assembly, comprising: a housing; a linkage system at least partially disposed within the housing and operable between fore and aft positions; and a cover assembly having a first member coupled to the linkage system for movement therewith, and a second member pivotally coupled to the first member, wherein the second member is configured to contact the housing and pivot rearwardly as driven outward by the linkage system. 2. The headrest assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second member includes first and second side portions that are spaced apart and a top portion interconnecting the first and second side portions. 3. The headrest assembly of claim 2 , wherein the first member includes first and second side portions that are spaced apart and a top portion interconnecting the first and second side portions. 4. The headrest assembly of claim 3 , including: pivot members extending inwardly from the first and second side portions of the second member; and pivot apertures disposed on the first and second side portions of the first member, wherein the pivot members of the first and second side portions of the second member are received in the pivot apertures of the first and second side portions of the first member to define a pivot axis between the first and second members of the cover assembly. 5. The headrest assembly of claim 4 , including: guide slots disposed through the first and second side portions of the first member; and guide members extending inwardly from the first and second side portions of the second member, wherein the guide members are received in the guide slots for limiting a pivoting movement of the second member relative to the first member. 6. The headrest assembly of claim 5 , including: mounting apertures disposed on opposite sides of the linkage system; and mounting bosses extending inwardly from the first and second side portions of the first member, wherein the mounting bosses of the first and second side portions of the first member are received in the mounting apertures of the linkage system. 7. The headrest assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second member further includes an engagement flange extending outwardly from an outer surface of the second member. 8. The headrest assembly of claim 7 , wherein the housing includes a front shroud having an interior rim portion. 9. The headrest assembly of claim 8 , wherein the engagement flange of the second member contacts the front shroud of the housing at the interior rim portion as the second member is driven outwardly by the linkage system. 10. The headrest assembly of claim 9 , wherein the interior rim portion of the front shroud retains the second member at the engagement flange to pivot an upper portion of the second member rearwardly as the second member is driven outwardly by the linkage system. 11. The headrest assembly of claim 9 , including: a housing having an interior rim portion, wherein the second member is disposed within an interior of the housing when the cover assembly is in the stowed position. 12. The headrest assembly of claim 11 , wherein the second member includes first and second side portions and a top portion interconnecting the first and second side portions. 13. The headrest assembly of claim 12 , wherein the second member further includes an engagement flange extending outwardly from an outer surface of the second member along the first and second side portions and the top portion of the second member. 14. The headrest assembly of claim 13 , wherein the engagement flange of the second member contacts the interior rim portion of the housing as the cover assembly is driven towards the deployed position by the linkage system, and further wherein the second member pivots rearwardly at a pivot axis defined between the first member and the second member. 15. A headrest assembly, comprising: a linkage system; a headrest bun coupled to the linkage system for movement between extended and retracted positions; and a cover assembly having a first member coupled to the linkage system and partially received in and moveably associated with a second member pivotally coupled to the first member, wherein the cover assembly is operable between deployed and stowed positions as the headrest bun moves between the extended and retracted positions respectively. 16. A headrest assembly, comprising: an adjustable cover assembly having an inner member telescopingly engaged with an outer member; and a linkage system coupled to the inner member and a headrest bun and configured for movement between fore and aft positions, wherein movement of the linkage system between the fore and aft positions drives movement of the adjustable cover assembly between deployed and stowed positions to at least partially cover the linkage system. 17. The headrest assembly of claim 16 , including: pivot members extending inwardly from first and second side portions of the outer member; and pivot apertures disposed on first and second side portions of the inner member, wherein the pivot members of the first and second side portions of the outer member are received in the pivot apertures of the first and second side portions of the inner member to define a pivot axis between the inner and outer members of the cover assembly. 18. The headrest assembly of claim 17 , wherein the pivot members include clips having spaced-apart and flexibly resilient engagement features. 19. The headrest assembly of claim 17 , including: guide slots disposed through the first and second side portions of the inner member; and guide members extending inwardly from the first and second side portions of the outer member, wherein the guide members of the outer member are received in the guide slots of the inner member. 20. The headrest assembly of claim 17 , including: a biasing mechanism having a first end coupled to the linkage system and a second end coupled to the outer member of the adjustable cover assembly.
