Described herein is a yellow imidazolium chromophore having a structure according to Formula V.

What is claimed is: 1. A compound having a structure according to Formula V and tautomers and salts thereof: wherein: (i) R 1b , R 1c and R 1f are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, halogen substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, alkyl group carrying a quaternary ammonium cation, alkoxy, aryloxy, acyl, halogen, a heterocyclic moiety, thioether, thiol with a linker group, alkylsulfonate, alkylsulfate, carboxylalkyl, acrylamide or substituted acrylamides with a linker group, vinylsulfone with a linker group, sulfonyl ethyl sulfate with a linker group, halo-s-triazines with a linker group, halopyrimidines with a linker group, haloquinoxalines with a linker group, or attached to a polymer backbone through a linker group; (ii) R 1a and R 1d are independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl, halogen substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, alkyl group carrying a quaternary ammonium cation, a heterocyclic moiety, thiol with a linker group, alkylsulfonate, alkylsulfate, carboxylalkyl, acrylamide or substituted acrylamides with a linker group, vinylsulfone with a linker group, sulfonyl ethyl sulfate with a linker group, halo-s-triazines with a linker group, halopyrimidines with a linker group, haloquinoxalines with a linker group, or attached to a polymer backbone through a linker group; (iii) R 1e and R 1g are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, halogen substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, alkyl group carrying a quaternary ammonium cation, a heterocyclic moiety, thiol with a linker group, alkylsulfonate, alkylsulfate, carboxylalkyl, acrylamide or substituted acrylamides with a linker group, vinylsulfone with a linker group, sulfonyl ethyl sulfate with a linker group, halo-s-triazines with a linker group, halopyrimidines with a linker group, haloquinoxalines with a linker group, or are attached to a polymer backbone through a linker group, or part of a cyclic structure and joined by substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or heteroalkyl groups (iv) R 1h is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, halogen substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, alkyl group carrying a quaternary ammonium cation, a heterocyclic moiety, thiol with a linker group, alkylsulfonate, alkylsulfate, carboxylalkyl, acrylamide or substituted acrylamides with a linker group, vinylsulfone with a linker group, sulfonyl ethyl sulfate with a linker group, halo-s-triazines with a linker group, halopyrimidines with a linker group, haloquinoxalines with a linker group, or attached to a polymer backbone through a linker group. 2. The compound according to claim 1 , wherein R 1a and R 1d both are —CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 NH 2 ; wherein R 1e is propyl; and wherein R 1h is hydrogen. 3. The compound according to claim 2 , wherein the compound is attached to a polyethylene amine backbone through R 1a , R 1d , or R 1g . 4. The compound according to claim 2 , wherein the compound is attached to a polyallylamine backbone through R 1a , R 1d , or R 1g . 5. The compound according to claim 2 , wherein the compound is attached to a peptide or protein backbone through R 1a , R 1d , or R 1g . 6. The compound according to claim 1 , wherein R 1a is —CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 NH 2 ; R 1d is hexyl; R 1e and R 1g are part of a 6-membered ring; and R 1h is hydrogen. 7. The compound according to claim 6 , wherein the compound is attached to a polyethyleneimine backbone through R 1a or R 1d . 8. The compound according to claim 6 , wherein the compound is attached to a polyallylamine backbone through R 1a or R 1d . 9. The compound according to claim 6 , wherein the compound is attached to a peptide or protein backbone through R 1a or R 1d . 10. The compound according to claim 1 wherein R 1a and R 1d both are —CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 NH 2 ; R 1e and R 1g are part of a 6-membered ring; and R 1h is hydrogen. 11. The compound according to claim 10 , wherein the compound is attached to a polyethyleneimine backbone through R 1a or R 1d . 12. The compound according to claim 10 , wherein the compound is attached to a polyallylamine backbone through R 1a or R 1d . 13. The compound according to claim 10 , wherein the compound is attached to a peptide or protein backbone through R 1a or R 1d . 14. The compound according to claim 1 wherein R 1a , R 1d , and R 1g are all —CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 NH 2 , and wherein R 1h is hydrogen. 15. The compound according to claim 14 , wherein the compound is attached to a polyethyleneimine backbone through R 1a , R 1d , or R 1g . 16. The compound according to claim 14 , wherein the compound is attached to a polyallylamine backbone through R 1a , R 1d , or R 1g . 17. The compound according to claim 1 wherein R 1a and R 1d both are —CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 NH 2 and R 1e is hexyl, and R 1h is hydrogen. 18. The compound according to claim 16 , wherein the compound is attached to a polyethylene amine backbone through R 1a or R 1d . 19. The compound according to claim 16 , wherein the compound is attached to a polyallylamine backbone through R 1a or R 1d . 20. The compound according to claim 16 , wherein the compound is attached to a peptide or protein backbone through R 1a or R 1d .
