Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A front suspension structure has a front portion on a first side member of a vehicle frame and a rear portion on the first side member rearward of the front portion. A front wheel is supported by a wheel support structure that is pivotally mounted to a front suspension structure of the first side member. A stop structure is installed to the first side member at the rear portion of the front suspension structure. The stop structure extends in an outboard direction of the first side member. The stop structure has a stop surface that defines an angle relative to the vehicle longitudinal direction between 110 and 130 degrees. In response to an impact event to a front area of the front wheel, the front wheel pivots relative to the wheel support structure moving a rear area of the front wheel into contact with the stop surface.

What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle structure comprising: a vehicle frame having a first side member and a second side member, the first side member and the second side member having respective front ends with each of the first side member and the second side member extending rearward from the front ends in a vehicle longitudinal direction, the vehicle longitudinal direction being defined relative to a lengthwise direction of the vehicle frame; a front suspension structure having a front portion and a rear portion, the front portion being coupled to the first side member at a first location rearward of the front end of the first side member, the rear portion being coupled to the first side member at a location rearward of the first location; a wheel support structure pivotally coupled to the front suspension structure; a front wheel being rotatably supported by the wheel support structure; and a stop structure installed to the first side member at a location rearward of the rear portion of the front suspension structure, the stop structure extending in an outboard direction from the first side member, the stop structure having a forward facing stop surface that extends to a distal outboard end of the stop structure, the stop structure further including an upper plate, a lower plate and a main plate, the upper plate and the lower plate being horizontally oriented and being spaced apart from one another, the main plate having a first section, a second section and a third section, the first section being attached to the first side member, the second section extending outboard from the first section and defining the stop surface and the third section extending rearward from the second section and wrapping around outboard portions of the upper plate and the lower plate forming a box-like structure, with the first section, the second section and the third section defining vertically oriented exterior surfaces of the box-like structure, such that in response to an off-center impact event that directs an impacting force to a front surface area of the front wheel, the front wheel pivots relative to the wheel support structure moving a rear surface area of the front wheel into contact with the stop surface with the stop structure absorbing at least a portion of the impacting force restricting further pivoting movement of the front wheel. 2. The vehicle structure according to claim 1 , wherein the first side member includes a cabin attachment flange that extends in an outboard direction from a side surface of the first side member, and the stop structure is attached to the side surface of the first side member and to the cabin attachment flange. 3. The vehicle structure according to claim 1 , wherein the stop structure further includes a mid-plate located between the upper plate and the lower plate, and, the mid-plate being spaced apart from the upper plate and the lower plate, with the main plate at least partially enclosing the mid-plate within the box-like structure. 4. The vehicle structure according to claim 1 , wherein the first side member includes a cabin attachment flange that extends in an outboard direction from a side surface of the first side member, and the third section of the main plate of the stop structure is rigidly attached to the cabin attachment flange. 5. The vehicle structure according to claim 4 , wherein the first section of the main plate of the stop structure is welded to a side surface of the first side member and the third section of the main plate of the stop structure is welded to the cabin attachment flange. 6. The vehicle structure according to claim 1 , further comprising a first cross-member that extends in a vehicle lateral direction from the first side member to the second side member at a location rearward of the front ends, the first cross-member being rigidly fixed to each the first side member and the second side member. 7. The vehicle structure according to claim 6 , wherein the front portion of the front suspension structure is located adjacent to and forward of an intersection of the first cross-member and the first side member. 8. The vehicle structure according to claim 6 , further comprising a second cross-member that extends in the vehicle lateral direction from the first side member to the second side member at a location rearward of the first cross-member, the second cross-member being rigidly fixed to each the first side member and the second side member. 9. The vehicle structure according to claim 8 , wherein the front portion of the front suspension structure is located adjacent to an intersection of the first cross-member and the first side member, and the rear portion of the front suspension structure is located adjacent to an intersection of the second cross-member and the first side member. 10. The vehicle structure according to claim 9 , further comprising an off-center impact reinforcement structure including a push arm coupled to the vehicle frame proximate the intersection of the first side member and the first cross-member and extending in a forward and laterally outboard direction from the intersection of the first side member and the first cross-member and forward of the front wheel. 11. The vehicle structure according to claim 10 , wherein the off-center impact reinforcement structure further includes a first diagonal structure extending rearward and laterally inboard from proximate the intersection of the first side member and the first cross-member. 12. The vehicle structure according to claim 11 , wherein the first diagonal structure extends from proximate the intersection of the first side member and the first cross-member to a mid-portion of the second cross-member. 13. The vehicle structure according to claim 11 , wherein the off-center impact reinforcement structure further includes a second diagonal structure extending rearward from the mid-portion of the second cross-member to the second side member. 14. The vehicle structure according to claim 1 , wherein the stop surface defines an angle relative to the vehicle longitudinal direction that is between 110 and 130 degrees. 15. A vehicle structure comprising: a vehicle frame having a first side member and a second side member, the first side member and the second side member having respective front ends with each of the first side member and the second side member extending rearward from the front ends in a vehicle longitudinal direction, the vehicle longitudinal direction being defined relative to a lengthwise direction of the vehicle frame, the first side member further includes a cabin attachment flange that extends in an outboard direction from an outboard side surface of the first side member; a front suspension structure having a front portion and a rear portion, the front portion being coupled to the first side member at a first location rearward of the front end of the first side member, the rear portion being coupled to the first side member at a location rearward of the first location; a wheel support structure pivotally coupled to the front suspension structure; a front wheel being rotatably supported by the wheel support structure; and a stop structure installed to the first side member at a location rearward of the rear portion of the front suspension structure, the stop structure extending in an outboard direction from the first side member, the stop structure having a forward facing stop surface that extends to a distal outboard end of the stop structure, the stop structure further including a vertically oriented main plate that has a first section, a second se
