Implementations are provided that permit a seamless activation of a game or other application on a host device from a game controller. The game may be launched on the host device in response to an activation signal that is dispatched from the game controller. The game controller may generate the activation signal or it may send such a signal to the host device for processing. The game controller may detect that an action button has been pressed and generate the activation signal in response thereto.

The invention claimed is: 1. A computer-implemented method, comprising: receiving, by a processor of a game controller communicatively coupled to a first host device, an indication of a notification about a game that is not currently launched on the first host device, wherein the game controller comprises an indicator light, a display, an action button, and at least one of a directional pad, an analog controller, a shoulder button, a trigger button, or a controller button, wherein the indicator light is different from the display; in response to receiving the indication of the notification, causing the indicator light to illuminate in a first indication configuration associated with a first game on the first host device, wherein the first indication configuration distinguishes the first game from a second game installed on the first host device; receiving an indication that the action button has been pressed at a first time; dispatching a first activation signal to the first host device in response to receiving the indication that the action button has been pressed at the first time, wherein the first activation signal causes the first game to be launched on the first host device; receiving an indication of a chat request; in response to receiving the indication of the chat request, causing the indicator light to illuminate in a second indication configuration that provides information about a first originator of the chat request in a game installed on the first host device, wherein the second indication configuration distinguishes the first originator from a second originator; receiving an indication that the action button has been pressed at a second time; and dispatching a second activation signal to the first host device in response to receiving the indication that the action button has been pressed at the second time, wherein the second activation signal causes a chat message application to be launched on the host device. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving the indication of the notification comprises receiving the indication of the notification from the first host. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the notification comprises a game invitation and an image of the first originator, the method further comprising: displaying the image on the display. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving an indication of a second host device; presenting a prompt in the display that shows a representation of the first host device and a representation of the second host device; and receiving a selection of the first host device. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the display is touch-sensitive, the method further comprising: receiving, by the display, an indication of the first activation signal. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving, on the display, a message from a player of the first game. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the notification indicates a leaderboard status change. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the game controller further comprises a computer readable memory, the method further comprising: storing an indication of a user account in the computer readable memory; and logging a user of the game controller into a game account based on the indication of the user account stored in the computer readable memory. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first activation signal further causes the first host device to be activated. 10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising activating a monitor for display of the first game. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of the notification comprises an audio cue. 12. A device, comprising: a display; an indicator light, wherein the indicator light is different from the display; an action button and at least one of a directional pad, an analog controller, a shoulder button, a trigger button, or a controller button; a communication chipset configured to communicatively couple the device to a first host device; and a processor configured to: receive an indication of a notification about a game that is not currently launched on the first host device; in response to receiving the indication of the notification, cause the indicator light to illuminate a first indication configuration associated with a first game on the first host device, wherein the first indication configuration distinguishes the first game from a second game installed on the first host device; receive an indication that the action button has been pressed at a first time; dispatch a first activation signal to the first host device in response to receiving the indication that the action button has been pressed at the first time, wherein the first activation signal causes the first game to be launched on the first host device; receive an indication of a chat request; in response to receiving the indication of the chat request, cause the indicator light to illuminate in a second indication configuration that provides information about a first originator of the chat request in a game installed on the first host device, wherein the second indication configuration distinguishes the first originator from a second originator; receive an indication that the action button has been pressed at a second time; and dispatch a second activation signal to the first host device in response to receiving the indication that the action button has been pressed at the second time, wherein the second activation signal causes a chat message application to be launched on the host device. 13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the processor is configured to receive the indication of the notification from the first host. 14. The device of claim 12 , wherein the notification comprises a game invitation and an image of the first originator and the processor is further configured to display the image on the display. 15. The device of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further configured to: receive an indication of a second host device; present a prompt in the display that shows a representation of the first host device and a representation of the second host device; and receive a selection of the first host device. 16. The device of claim 12 , wherein the display is touch-sensitive and the processor is further configured to receive, by the display, an indication of the first activation signal. 17. The device of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive, on the display, a message from a player of the first game. 18. The device of claim 12 , wherein the notification indicates a leaderboard status change. 19. The device of claim 12 , further comprising a computer readable memory, and wherein the processor further is configured to: store an indication of a user account in the computer readable memory; and log a user of the device into a game account based on the indication of the user account stored in the computer readable memory. 20. The device of claim 12 , wherein the first activation signal further causes the first host device to be activated. 21. The device of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further configured to activate a monitor for display of the first game. 22. The device of claim 12 , wherein the indication of the notification comprises at least one of a visual cue or an audio cue. 23.
