Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method for establishing the refraction of an eye ( 9 ) by means of a refractometer ( 3 ) is provided, in which the current visual axis (S) of the eye ( 9 ) is established before establishing the refraction, the refractometer ( 3 ) is aligned with respect to the visual axis (S) of the eye ( 9 ) and the refraction is established after the alignment. The visual axis (S) of the eye ( 9 ) is established on the basis of the position of a Purkinje image of at least one light source ( 41, 50 ) used to illuminate the eye and a relationship between the position of the Purkinje image and the visual axis (S).

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method for establishing refraction of an eye by means of a refractometer, comprising: establishing an orientation of a visual axis of the eye before establishing the refraction while a patient having the eye is under general anesthesia or the eye is anesthetized in a retrobulbar fashion; aligning the refractometer with respect to the visual axis of the eye by matching an orientation of the refractometer with the orientation of the visual axis so that a refraction measurement takes place on the visual axis of the eye; and establishing the refraction after the alignment, wherein the orientation of the visual axis of the eye is established based on a position of a Purkinje image of at least one light source used to illuminate the eye and a relationship between the position of the Purkinje image and the orientation of the visual axis, and wherein the relationship between the orientation of the visual axis and the position of the Purkinje image on the eye is established during a reference measurement, the reference measurement includes determining a set of positions for a plurality of Purkinje images for a plurality of viewing directions. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising establishing a radius of curvature of a cornea and/or internal pressure of the eye by illuminating the eye by at least one light source and establishing the radius of curvature and/or the internal pressure based on a property of at least one Purkinje image of the at least one light source and a relationship between this property and the radius of curvature and/or the internal pressure. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the position of the Purkinje image is determined based on the set of positions for the plurality of Purkinje images for the plurality of viewing directions and the set of positions for the plurality of Purkinje images for the plurality of viewing directions are stored during the reference measurement.
