Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A colony basket and method of using the same for handling poultry from DOC through the growing process and on to a production facility comprising a harvesting system, a loading system, a transport system, an unloading and storing system, hanging system and cleaning system. The system and method performs the steps of harvesting and colonizing live poultry into a singly stackable and transportable colony basket, stacking and loading the trays on a transport, unloading and temporarily storing the poultry for subsequent processing.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

What is claimed is: 1. A poultry colony basket comprising: a. a colony basket having a parametrical top rim flange defining an upward facing opening having a first geometry and a parametrical bottom rim flange defining a downward facing opening where said downward facing opening is substantially closed by a floor and said downward facing opening has a second geometry substantially identical to said first geometry of the top rim flange; b. a plurality of vertically upright longitudinal side walls and vertically upright latitudinal side walls perpendicularly extended between said bottom and top rim flanges such that said bottom and top rim flanges are in substantially parallel planes; c. a plurality of standoff members protruding vertically upward from said top rim flange; d. a vertical slot extending from a gap in the top rim flange downward into at least one of the plurality of vertically upright latitudinal side walls adapted for receiving and retaining a sustenance assembly, where the vertical slot is narrow and vertically elongated for retaining the sustenance assembly; and e. a water channel extending through and retained in the vertical slot. 2. The poultry colony basket as recited in claim 1 , further comprising: an elevator strip extending substantially parallel to and above the floor and extending between one of two vertically upright longitudinal side walls or two vertically upright latitudinal side walls of the plurality of vertically upright longitudinal side walls and the plurality of vertically upright latitudinal side walls respectively. 3. The poultry colony basket as recited in claim 1 , further comprising: a. said water channel having a downward pointing exit nozzle and said vertical slot having substantially vertical and substantially parallel sides; b. a water trough suspended from the channel disposed beneath the exit nozzle for receiving water; c. a feed channel extending substantially parallel with respect to the water channel and supported underneath by at least one of the plurality of vertically upright latitudinal side walls; and d. a feed trough suspended from the feed channel for receiving feed therein. 4. The poultry colony basket as recited in claim 3 , further comprising: said colony basket being detachable from said water channel and said feed channel. 5. The poultry colony basket as recited in claim 3 , further comprising: said feed channel and said feed trough being centrally located within the colony basket. 6. The poultry colony basket as recited in claim 1 , where the vertically upright longitudinal and vertically upright latitudinal side walls are vented. 7. A poultry colony basket system comprising: a. a plurality of colony baskets stacked vertically one on top of the other with the bottom of one of the plurality of colony baskets engaging the top of another of the plurality of colony baskets immediately below, where each of said plurality of colony baskets further comprise: b. a parametrical top rim flange defining an upward facing opening having a first geometry and a parametrical bottom rim flange defining a downward facing opening where said downward facing opening is closed by a floor and said downward facing opening has a second geometry substantially identical to said first geometry of the top rim flange; c. a plurality of vertically upright longitudinal side walls and vertically upright latitudinal side walls perpendicularly extended between said bottom and top rim flanges such that said bottom and top rim flanges are in substantially parallel planes; d. a plurality of standoff members protruding vertically upward from said top rim flange; e. a vertical slot extending from a gap in the top rim flange downward into one of the plurality of vertically upright latitudinal side walls adapted for receiving and retaining a watering assembly, where the vertical slot is narrow and vertically elongated for retaining the watering assembly; and f. said plurality of colony baskets being stacked where said bottom rim flange engages at least one of said plurality of standoff members of the basket immediately below. 8. The poultry colony basket system as recited in claim 7 , where the upward facing opening and the downward facing opening are rectangular and the vertical height of the side walls are sufficient to accommodate the height of a market age mature boiler when said colony baskets are stacked. 9. The poultry colony basket system as recited in claim 8 , where each of the plurality of colony baskets further comprises; an elevator strip extending substantially parallel to and above the floor and extending between one of two vertically upright longitudinal side walls or two vertically upright latitudinal side walls of the plurality of vertically upright longitudinal side walls and the plurality of vertically upright latitudinal side walls respectively. 10. The poultry colony basket system as recited in claim 8 , where each of said plurality of colony baskets further comprising a netting material draped over said upward facing opening. 11. The poultry colony basket system as recited in claim 8 , where the vertically upright longitudinal and vertically upright latitudinal side walls of each of the plurality colony baskets are vented. 12. The poultry colony basket system as recited in claim 8 , further comprising: said vertical slot adapted for receiving and retaining the watering assembly has substantially vertical and substantially parallel sides.
