The disclosure relates to articles of footwear and components thereof, including outsoles, which can be used in conditions normally conducive to the accumulation of soil on the outsoles. In particular, the disclosure relates to articles of footwear and components thereof including an outsole with an external hydrogel film having a wet-state storage modulus at least 25 MPa lower than its dry-state storage modulus. The outsoles can prevent or reduce the accumulation of soil on the footwear during wear on unpaved surfaces such as sporting fields. When the outsoles are wetted with water, the outsoles can become more compliant and/or can rapidly uptake and/or expel water, which can prevent soil from adhering to the outsole and/or can assist in shedding soil present on the outsole.

What is claimed: 1. An outsole for an article of footwear, the outsole comprising: an outsole backing member, wherein the outsole backing member includes a plurality of traction elements; and a film secured to the outsole backing member and defining an external surface of the outsole, wherein the film comprises a hydrogel, wherein the film has a wet-state storage modulus and a dry-state storage modulus, each as characterized by a Storage Modulus Test with a Neat Film Sampling Procedure, and wherein the wet-state storage modulus is at least 25 MPa lower than the dry-state storage modulus of the film. 2. The outsole of claim 1 , wherein the wet-state storage modulus of the film ranges from 400 MPa to 800 MPa less than the dry-state storage modulus of the film. 3. The outsole of claim 1 , wherein the wet-state storage modulus of the film ranges from 25 MPa to 200 MPa less than the dry-state storage modulus of the film. 4. The outsole of claim 1 , wherein the wet-state storage modulus of the film is at least 40% less than the dry-state storage modulus of the film. 5. The outsole of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel comprises a physically crosslinked polymeric network having carbamate linkages. 6. The outsole of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel comprises a physically crosslinked polymeric network having amide linkages. 7. The outsole of claim 1 , wherein the film has a dry-state film thickness ranging from 0.1 millimeters to 2 millimeters. 8. The outsole of claim 7 , wherein the film has a wet-state film thickness ranging from 0.25 millimeters to 5 millimeters. 9. The outsole of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel comprises crystalline regions and amorphous hydrophilic regions, wherein the amorphous regions are covalently bonded to the crystalline regions. 10. The outsole of claim 9 , wherein the amorphous hydrophilic regions are bonded to the crystalline regions with carbamate linkages. 11. The outsole of claim 9 , wherein the amorphous hydrophilic regions are present in the hydrogel at a ratio of at least 20:1 by weight relative to the crystalline regions. 12. The outsole of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel comprises a crosslinked polymeric network that has one or more carbamate linkages. 13. The outsole of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of traction elements comprises a terminal edge, and wherein the hydrogel is not present on the terminal edges of any of the plurality of traction elements. 14. The outsole of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the traction elements is selected from the group consisting of: a cleat, a stud, a spike, and a lug. 15. The outsole of claim 1 , wherein the traction elements are integrally formed with the backing member. 16. The outsole of claim 1 , wherein the traction elements are removable traction elements. 17. An outsole for an article of footwear, the outsole comprising: an outsole substrate, wherein the outsole substrate includes a plurality of traction elements; and a film secured to the outsole substrate and defining an external surface of the outsole, wherein the film comprises a hydrogel, wherein the film has a wet-state storage modulus and a dry-state storage modulus, each as characterized by a Storage Modulus Test with a Neat Film Sampling Procedure, wherein the wet-state storage modulus of the film is at least 20% lower than the dry-state storage modulus of the film. 18. The outsole of claim 17 , wherein the wet-state storage modulus of the film ranges from 100 MPa to 800 MPa less than the dry-state storage modulus of the film. 19. The outsole of claim 17 , wherein the wet-state storage modulus of the film is less than 10% of the dry-state storage modulus of the film. 20. The outsole of claim 17 , wherein the film has a dry-state film thickness ranging from 0.15 millimeters to 1.5 millimeters. 21. The outsole of claim 17 , wherein the plurality of traction elements comprise one or more traction elements secured to the outsole substrate at a forefoot region of the outsole substrate. 22. The outsole of claim 17 , wherein the hydrogel comprises crystalline regions and amorphous hydrophilic regions, wherein the amorphous regions are covalently bonded to the crystalline regions. 23. The outsole of claim 22 , wherein the amorphous hydrophilic regions are bonded to the crystalline regions with carbamate linkages. 24. The outsole of claim 22 , wherein the amorphous hydrophilic regions are present in the hydrogel at a ratio of at least 20:1 by weight relative to the crystalline regions. 25. The outsole of claim 17 , wherein the hydrogel comprises a crosslinked polymeric network that has one or more carbamate linkages. 26. The outsole of claim 17 , wherein each of the plurality of traction elements comprises a terminal edge, and wherein the hydrogel is not present on the terminal edges of any of the plurality of traction elements. 27. The outsole of claim 17 , wherein one or more of the traction elements is selected from the group consisting of: a cleat, a stud, a spike, and a lug. 28.
