Official abstract text for this publication.
An illustrative method of making an elevator load bearing member having at least one elongated tension member at least partially covered by a jacket includes mixing a flame retardant with a polymer material. The flame retardant is selected from a group consisting of (i) a halogen-free melamine based intumescent comprising melamine cyanurate, melamine-phosphate, melamine pyrophosphate or melamine polyphosphate in an amount up to about 20% by weight of the thermoplastic polymer or (ii) a filled polymer having a nanoscale filler chemically bonded to a matrix phase. Applying the mixed flame retardant and polymer material to the tension member forms a jacket of a desired shape.

We claim: 1. A method of making an elevator load bearing member, the method comprising: applying a thermoplastic polymer material to at least one elongated tension member to form a jacket of a desired shape, wherein the formed jacket includes a plurality of voids in the formed jacket; and at least partially filling the plurality of voids in the formed jacket with a flame retardant material, wherein the flame retardant material comprises at least one of a halogen-free melamine based intumescent, a nanoscale filler, carbon nanotubes, and carbon nanofibers. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the flame retardant material comprises the halogen-free melamine based intumescent and the flame retardant material comprises at least one of melamine cyanurate, melamine-phosphate, melamine pyrophosphate or melamine polyphosphate. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the flame retardant material comprises the nanoscale filler and the flame retardant material comprises polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane. 4. The method of claim 1 , comprising chemically bonding the flame retardant material to the formed jacket.
