What is claimed is: 1. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) comprising: a processor configured to monitor for downlink control information on a downlink control channel; the processor configured to decode information in a transmission on the downlink control channel; the processor configured to determine that a Node-B is requesting the WTRU to send a channel quality indicator (CQI) based on a triggering criteria associated with the transmission on the downlink control channel; and the processor configured to send the CQI to the Node-B via a shared uplink channel. 2. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the information comprises an identifier of the WTRU, and wherein the identifier is a radio network temporary identifier (RNTI). 3. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the processor configured to periodically send CQIs via the shared uplink channel. 4. The WTRU of claim 3 , wherein the processor is configured to identify periodic intervals for the CQIs that are sent periodically. 5. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to send, to the Node-B, acknowledgements and negative acknowledgements via the shared uplink channel. 6. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the downlink control channel is a shared channel. 7. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the triggering criteria is one of a trigger or a poll. 8. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to select the CQI based on a target block error rate (BLER). 9. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the CQI is an index value. 10. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the CQI is a relative value to a previously sent CQI. 11. The WTRU of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to send the CQI at a physical layer. 12. A method performed by a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), the method comprising: monitoring for downlink control information on a downlink control channel; decoding, by the WTRU, information in a transmission on the downlink control channel; determining, by the WTRU, that a Node-B is requesting the WTRU to send a channel quality indicator (CQI) based on a triggering criteria associated with the transmission on the downlink control channel; and sending, by the WTRU, the CQI to the Node-B via a shared uplink channel. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the information comprises an identifier of the WTRU, and wherein the identifier is a radio network temporary identifier (RNTI). 14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising periodically sending CQIs via the shared uplink channel. 15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising identifying periodic intervals for the CQIs that are sent periodically. 16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising sending, to the Node-B, acknowledgements and negative acknowledgements via the shared uplink channel. 17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the downlink control channel is a shared channel. 18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the triggering criteria is one of a trigger or a poll. 19. The method of claim 12 , further comprising selecting the CQI based on a target block error rate (BLER). 20. The method of claim 12 , wherein the CQI is an index value. 21. The method of claim 12 , wherein the CQI is a relative value to a previously sent CQI. 22. The method of claim 12 , further comprising sending the CQI at a physical layer.
