The present embodiments provide systems and methods for deploying at least a portion of a stent. In one embodiment, the system comprises a cannula having an outer surface, and at least one coiled member having proximal and distal ends and a plurality of turns disposed therebetween. One of the proximal and distal ends of the coiled member is secured to the outer surface of the cannula, and the other of the proximal and distal ends of the coiled member is unsecured relative to the outer surface of the cannula. A portion of a stent is looped around the unsecured end of the coiled member and disposed within spacing between adjacent turns of the coiled member. Rotation of the cannula subsequently causes the portion of the stent to disengage from the coiled member.

We claim: 1. A method for deploying at least a portion of a stent, the method comprising: introducing a cannula having an outer surface, and further introducing at least one coiled member having proximal and distal ends, wherein one of the proximal and distal ends of the coiled member is secured to the outer surface of the cannula, and the other of the proximal and distal ends of the coiled member is unsecured relative to the outer surface of the cannula; introducing a stent, wherein a portion of the stent is disposed around the end of the coiled member that is unsecured relative to the outer surface of the cannula; and rotating the cannula to cause the coiled member to rotate and thereby disengage the portion of the stent from the coiled member, wherein first and second coiled members are longitudinally spaced apart from one another along a length of the cannula, the method comprising rotating the cannula to cause a first stent portion to disengage from the first coiled member and rotating the cannula to cause a second stent portion to disengage from the second coiled member. 2. The method of claim 1 , where the first coiled member has a plurality of turns and the portion of the stent that is disposed around the unsecured end of the first coiled member is disposed within a spacing between adjacent turns of the first coiled member. 3. The method of claim 2 , where the proximal end of the first coiled member is secured to the outer surface of the cannula, and the distal end of the first coiled member is unsecured relative to the outer surface of the cannula, such that the stent is looped around the distal end of the first coiled member and further is disposed within a spacing between adjacent distal turns of the first coiled member in a delivery state. 4. The method of claim 1 , where the distal end of the first coiled member is secured to the outer surface of the cannula, and the proximal end of the first coiled member is unsecured relative to the outer surface of the cannula, such that the stent is looped around the proximal end of the first coiled member and further is disposed within a spacing between adjacent proximal turns of the first coiled member in a delivery state. 5. The method of claim 1 , where the first coiled member and the second coiled member each comprise a plurality of turns, and the first coiled member comprises a greater number of turns that are unsecured relative to the cannula than the second coiled member, thereby enabling the second stent portion to disengage from the second coiled member before the first stent portion disengages from the first coiled member when the cannula is rotated in a uniform direction. 6. A method for deploying at least a portion of a stent, the method comprising: introducing a cannula having an outer surface, and further introducing at least one coiled member having proximal and distal ends, wherein one of the proximal and distal ends of the coiled member is secured to the outer surface of the cannula, and the other of the proximal and distal ends of the coiled member is unsecured relative to the outer surface of the cannula; introducing a stent in a position being disposed over the cannula, wherein a portion of the stent is disposed around the end of the coiled member that is unsecured relative to the outer surface of the cannula; and rotating the cannula to cause the coiled member to rotate and thereby disengage the portion of the stent from the coiled member. 7. The method of claim 6 , where the coiled member has a plurality of turns and the portion of the stent that is disposed around the unsecured end of the coiled member is disposed within a spacing between adjacent turns of the coiled member. 8. The method of claim 6 , where the proximal end of the coiled member is secured to the outer surface of the cannula, and the distal end of the coiled member is unsecured relative to the outer surface of the cannula, such that the stent is looped around the distal end of the coiled member and further is disposed within a spacing between adjacent distal turns of the coiled member in a delivery state. 9. The method of claim 6 , where the distal end of the coiled member is secured to the outer surface of the cannula, and the proximal end of the coiled member is unsecured relative to the outer surface of the cannula, such that the stent is looped around the proximal end of the coiled member and further is disposed within a spacing between adjacent proximal turns of the coiled member in a delivery state. 10. The method of claim 6 , wherein first and second coiled members are longitudinally spaced apart from one another along a length of the cannula, the method comprising rotating the cannula to cause a first stent portion to disengage from the first coiled member and rotating the cannula to cause a second stent portion to disengage from the second coiled member. 11. The method of claim 10 , where the first coiled member and the second coiled member each comprise a plurality of turns, and the first coiled member comprises a greater number of turns that are unsecured relative to the cannula than the second coiled member, thereby enabling the second stent portion to disengage from the second coiled member before the first stent portion disengages from the first coiled member when the cannula is rotated in a uniform direction. 12. A method for deploying at least a portion of a stent, the method comprising: introducing a cannula having an outer surface, and further introducing at least one coiled member having proximal and distal ends, wherein one of the proximal and distal ends of the coiled member is secured to the outer surface of the cannula, and the other of the proximal and distal ends of the coiled member is unsecured relative to the outer surface of the cannula; introducing a stent, wherein a portion of the stent is disposed around the end of the coiled member that is unsecured relative to the outer surface of the cannula; rotating the cannula to cause the coiled member to rotate and thereby disengage the portion of the stent from the coiled member; and using a protective cage to encircle at least a portion of the coiled member while the portion of the stent is disengaged from the coiled member. 13. The method of claim 12 , where the protective cage comprises a plurality of struts separated by a plurality of slots, where a portion of the stent that is releasably secured to the coiled member extends through one of the plurality of slots in a delivery state. 14. The method of claim 13 , where at least one of the plurality of slots has proximal and distal regions and a width at the proximal region is greater than a width at the distal regions. 15. The method of claim 13 , where each of the plurality of struts and each of the plurality of slots are generally parallel to each other in a direction running along a longitudinal axis of the apparatus. 16. The method of claim 12 , where the protective cage is circumferentially rotatable relative to the cannula. 17. The method of claim 12 , where an atraumatic tip is coupled to the cannula, the method further comprising disposing at least a portion of the atraumatic tip beneath the protective cage, and where protective cage can rotate circumferentially relative to the atraumatic tip and the cannula.
