What is claimed is: 1. A surgical method comprising: inserting a measurement tool in a patient, wherein the measurement tool comprises a fixation measurement element and a support arm element; and removing the measurement tool and inserting an implant for insertion into the patient wherein the fixation measurement element of the measurement tool is positioned within a cavity drilled into a bone of a patient. 2. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the measurement tool further comprises a polyaxial connection element. 3. The surgical method of claim 2 , wherein the polyaxial connection element permits movement of the support arm element along the fixation measurement element. 4. The surgical method of claim 2 , wherein the polyaxial connection element permits vertical movement of the support arm element along the fixation measurement element. 5. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the fixation measurement element comprises indentations extending along a length of the fixation measurement element. 6. The surgical method of claim 5 , wherein the fixation measurement element further comprises markings extending along a length of the fixation measurement element. 7. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the implant comprises an artificial facet joint. 8. The surgical method of claim 7 , wherein the artificial facet joint comprises a fixation element connected to a facet joint element. 9. The surgical method of claim 8 , wherein the facet joint element comprises a support arm and a facet joint bearing surface. 10. The surgical method of claim 8 , wherein the fixation element is connected to the facet joint element via a polyaxial connection. 11. A surgical method comprising: inserting a measurement tool in a patient, wherein the measurement tool comprises a fixation measurement element and a support arm element, wherein the support arm element is moveable polyaxially relative to the fixation element; and inserting an implant for insertion into the patient, wherein the fixation measurement element of the measurement tool is positioned within a cavity drilled into a bone of a patient. 12. The surgical method of claim 11 , wherein the measurement tool further comprises a polyaxial connection element. 13. The surgical method of claim 12 , wherein the polyaxial connection element permits movement of the support arm element along the fixation measurement element. 14. The surgical method of claim 12 , wherein the polyaxial connection element permits vertical movement of the support arm element along the fixation measurement element. 15. The surgical method of claim 11 , wherein the fixation measurement element comprises indentations extending along a length of the fixation measurement element. 16. The surgical method of claim 15 , wherein the fixation measurement element further comprises markings extending along a length of the fixation measurement element. 17. The surgical method of claim 11 , wherein the implant comprises an artificial facet joint. 18. The surgical method of claim 17 , wherein the artificial facet joint comprises a fixation element connected to a facet joint element. 19. The surgical method of claim 18 , wherein the facet joint element comprises a support arm and a facet joint bearing surface. 20. The surgical method of claim 18 , wherein the fixation element is connected to the facet joint element via a polyaxial connection.
