A modular lighting system for providing light in various areas includes one or more canopies, a set of bars, a set of hangers for supporting the bars from canopies and, optionally other supports, a set of pendants with light emitting elements and a set of hangers for supporting the pendants from the bars. The bars include two segments with conductive rails disposed or imbedded in their inner surfaces. The hangers have one or two rods and bases shaped and sized for mounting on the bars with the rods contacting the conductive rails. The hangers and bars cooperate to allow the hangers to be placed anywhere along the bars. Pendants can be hanged on the bars singly, or in clusters. In this manner systems can be formed easily and quickly to achieve systems having various esthetic and utilitarian configurations.

What is claimed is: 1. A modular lighting system, comprising: a canopy connected to a power source; a first hanger extending downwardly from and connected to said canopy; a first horizontal bar that is supported by and connected to said first hanger; a second hanger extending downwardly from and connected to said first horizontal bar; a second horizontal bar that is supported by and connected to said second hanger; a third hanger extending downwardly from and connected to said second horizontal bar; and a light pendant that is supported by and connected to said third hanger, wherein said first hanger, said second hanger and said third hanger and said first horizontal bar and said second horizontal bar cooperate to provide electric power from said canopy to said pendant, wherein each of said first hanger, said second hanger and said third hanger includes a base at one end defined by a horizontal end wall and two outer walls extending substantially perpendicularly to said horizontal wall, wherein each of said first hanger, said second hanger and said third hanger includes at least one metal clip extending from said horizontal wall and between said outer walls, wherein each of said first horizontal bar and said second horizontal bar includes two substantially parallel bar segments for defining a longitudinal space therebetween, and wherein said at least one metal clip of each of said first hanger, said second hanger and said third hanger extends between said bar segments when said first hanger, said second hanger and said third hanger is connected to at least one of said first horizontal bar and said second horizontal bar. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of said first horizontal bar and said second horizontal bar includes two substantially parallel bar segments defining a longitudinal space therebetween with a top opening and a bottom opening. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein each of said bar segments has an inside surface with a rail electrically coupled to at least one of said first hanger, said second hanger and said third hanger. 4. The system of claim 2 , wherein each of said segments are each delimited at a first end and a second end, said first end of each of said segments are joined together by a first connector and said second end of each of said segments are joined together by a second connector. 5. The system of claim 2 , further comprising a spacer element configured to keep said segments spaced apart from each other. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of said first hanger, said second hanger and said third hanger includes two rods with at least one of said rods made of an electrically conductive material. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein said two outer walls of said first hanger, said second hanger and said third hanger are disposed outwardly on either side of at least one of said first horizontal bar and said second horizontal bar to which at least one of said first hanger, said second hanger and said third hanger is connected. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of said first hanger, said second hanger and said third hanger includes a base at one end that defines a channel. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein said base includes a metal clip in said channel. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein said metal clip is electrically coupled to a metal rod which extends lengthwise along each of said first hanger, said second hanger and said third hanger. 11. The system of claim 10 , wherein said base fits over at least one of said first horizontal bar and said second horizontal bar to which at least one of said first hanger, said second hanger and said third hanger is connected. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein each of said first horizontal bar and said second horizontal bar includes a metal rail that is electrically coupled to said metal clip.
