Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A constant mesh gearbox has five parallel rotational axes. The input and output axes are not aligned. Up to eight forward speeds and two reverse speeds are disclosed, with two very low ratios suitable for non-highway travel. The transmission is suitable for two and four wheel drive.

The invention claimed is: 1. A constant mesh gearbox having a plurality of individually selectable forward speed ratios, and comprising: a casing defining an array of parallel rotational axes, said axes including an input axis, an output axis- and a plurality of intermediate axes; and gear pairs for driving between members rotatable on the input axis, the output axis and the intermediate axes, wherein a first reverse speed ratio is provided by connecting an input shaft rotatable on the input axis with an output member rotatable on the output axis via a first shaft rotatable on one of said intermediate axes and a first idler rotatable on a second shaft rotatable on another of said intermediate axes, said first idler comprising a double gear having side by side gear profiles of different diameter, one of said profiles comprising an input and the other of said profiles comprising an output, wherein a second reverse speed ratio is provided by connecting said input shaft with said output member via said first shaft and a second idler rotatable on said second shaft, and wherein said first and second idlers are alternately connectable to said first shaft via a double acting synchromesh coupler. 2. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein said first shaft is directly coupled to a layshaft on another of said intermediate axes via a gear pair. 3. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 2 , wherein said layshaft is said second shaft. 4. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein the input of said first idler is of larger diameter than the output of said first idler. 5. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein the first idler is connected for rotation with the input shaft at all times. 6. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein said first idler drives a gear wheel connectable on demand to said first shaft. 7. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein said second idler is a double gear having side by side gear profiles of different diameter, one of said profiles comprising an input and the other of said profiles comprising an output. 8. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 7 , wherein the input of said second idler is of larger diameter than the output of said second idler. 9. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 8 , wherein the second idler is connected for rotation with the input shaft at all times. 10. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 9 , wherein the second idler drives a gear wheel connectable on demand to said first shaft. 11. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein said second idler is supported for rotation on said first shaft by a rolling element bearing. 12. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein said first and second idlers comprise drive elements of respective forward speed ratios. 13. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 12 , wherein said first and second idlers are connectable to said second shaft via respective synchromesh couplers. 14. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 1 , wherein said first idler comprises an assembly of two gear wheels, one gear wheel being fixed for rotation on a projecting annulus of another gear wheel. 15. A constant mesh gearbox according to claim 14 , wherein said second idler comprises an assembly of two gear wheels, one gear wheel being fixed for rotation on a projecting annulus of another gear wheel. 16. A vehicle powertrain incorporating a constant mesh gearbox according to claim 1 . 17. A vehicle comprising a constant mesh gearbox according to claim 1 . 18. A constant mesh gearbox having a plurality of individually selectable forward speed ratios, and comprising: a casing defining an array of parallel rotational axes, said axes including an input axis, an output axis and a plurality of intermediate axes; and gear pairs for driving between members rotatable on the input axis, the output axis and the intermediate axes, wherein a first reverse speed ratio is provided by connecting an input shaft rotatable on the input axis with an output member rotatable on the output axis via a first shaft rotatable on one of said intermediate axes and a first idler rotatable on a second shaft rotatable on another of said intermediate axes, wherein a second reverse speed ratio is provided by connecting said input shaft with said output member via said first shaft and a second idler rotatable on said second shaft, and wherein said first shaft is directly coupled to a layshaft on another of said intermediate axes via a gear pair. 19. A constant mesh gearbox having a plurality of individually selectable forward speed ratios, and comprising: a casing defining an array of parallel rotational axes, said axes including an input axis, an output axis and a plurality of intermediate axes; and gear pairs for driving between members rotatable on the input axis, the output axis and the intermediate axes, wherein a first reverse speed ratio is provided by connecting an input shaft rotatable on the input axis with an output member rotatable on the output axis via a first shaft rotatable on one of said intermediate axes and a first idler rotatable on a second shaft rotatable on another of said intermediate axes, wherein a second reverse speed ratio is provided by connecting said input shaft with said output member via said first shaft and a second idler rotatable on said second shaft, and wherein said first idler comprises an assembly of two gear wheels, one gear wheel being fixed for rotation on a projecting annulus of another gear wheel or said second idler is a double gear having side by side gear profiles of different diameter, one of said profiles comprising an input and the other of said profiles comprising an output.
