Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Biomass feedstocks (e.g., plant biomass, animal biomass, and municipal waste biomass) are processed to produce useful products, such as fuels. For example, systems are described that can convert feedstock materials to a sugar solution, which can then be fermented to produce ethanol. Biomass feedstock is dispersed in a liquid medium and then saccharified.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A feedstock saccharification system comprising: a tank configured to contain a cellulosic or lignocellulosic biomass feedstock having a bulk density of less than 0.75 g/cm 3 and a liquid medium; a delivery device configured to deliver the biomass feedstock to the vessel, the delivery device comprising a hopper disposed above and outside the vessel and a vibrating device configured to vibrate the hopper; and a dispersing system configured to disperse the biomass feedstock in the liquid medium. 2. The system of claim 1 wherein the dispersing system comprises a chamber and, within the chamber, a rotating member which draws the feedstock and liquid medium into the chamber and expels a dispersion of the feedstock in the medium from the chamber. 3. The system of claim 2 wherein the rotating member generates sufficiently high static fluid pressure within the chamber so that the dispersing system functions as a centrifugal pump. 4. The system of claim 1 wherein the rotating member comprises mixing elements arranged coaxially with a rotor that is disposed in rotor-stator relationship with a side wall of the chamber. 5. The system of claim 1 wherein the dispersing system comprises a jet mixer. 6. The system of claim 1 wherein the dispersing system comprises a positive displacement pump. 7. The system of claim 6 wherein the positive displacement pump comprises a progressive cavity pump. 8. The system of claim 5 wherein the jet mixer comprises a jet flow agitator. 9. The system of claim 1 wherein the biomass feedstock has a bulk density of less than 0.5 g/cm 3 . 10. The system of claim 1 wherein the biomass feedstock has a bulk density of less than 0.25 g/cm 3 . 11. The system of claim 1 wherein the biomass feedstock has a BET surface area of greater than 0.5 m 2 /g. 12. The system of claim 1 wherein the biomass feedstock has a BET surface area of greater than 1 m 2 /g. 13. The system of claim 1 wherein the biomass feedstock has a BET surface area of greater than 5 m 2 /g. 14. The system of claim 1 wherein the biomass feedstock has a porosity of greater than 70%. 15. The system of claim 1 wherein the biomass feedstock is selected from the group consisting of paper, wood, wood-related materials, grasses, rice hulls, bagasse, jute, hemp, flax, bamboo, sisal, abaca, straw, switchgrass, alfalfa, hay, corn cobs, corn stover, coconut hair, cotton and mixtures thereof. 16. The system of claim 1 wherein the biomass feedstock comprises corn cobs.
