Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods of coating seeds with polymers and seeds coated with such polymers are disclosed herein. The polymers can be phosphonates, sulfonates, polymers of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, polyaminopolyethermethylene phosphonate, polysuccinic oligomers, acrylic acid/2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, blends of acrylic acid/2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid with polyaminopolyethermethylene phosphonate, sulfomethylated acrylic acid/acrylamide, blends of sulfomethylated acrylic acid/acrylamide with polyaminopolyethermethylene phosphonate, polymaleic acid, acrylic acid/acrylamide copolymers, polyacrylic acid, trimethylglycine hydrochloride, blends of polyaminopolyethermethylene phosphonate with trimethylglycine hydrochloride, and any combination or salt of such polymers. Methods of monitoring, determining, and controlling the concentration of scale inhibitors in an agricultural irrigation system are also disclosed herein.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of monitoring, determining, and controlling the concentration of scale inhibitors in an agricultural irrigation system comprising: providing an irrigation pipeline having a first end, a second end, and a side stream pipe near the second end; providing a water pump in communication with a water source, said water source and water pump being in fluid communication with the first end of the irrigation pipeline; providing a scale inhibitor pump in communication with a scale inhibitor storage device, said scale inhibitor pump being in fluid communication with an injection site near the first end of the irrigation pipeline, wherein said scale inhibitor storage device comprises one or more scale inhibitor compositions, further wherein a fluorescent tag is copolymerized onto a backbone of the one or more scale inhibitor compositions; providing a fluorometer that is operably connected to and in communication with the side stream pipe of the irrigation pipeline, wherein the fluorometer comprises a controller; preprogramming an optimal fluorescent signal value into the controller; pumping water into the first end of the irrigation pipeline; pumping a known amount of the one or more scale inhibitor compositions into the injection site of the irrigation pipeline such that the one or more scale inhibitor compositions combine with the water to form a mixture; allowing the mixture to flow through the pipeline such that a majority of the mixture exits the second end of the pipeline and a portion of the mixture is routed through the side stream pipe and the fluorometer; and measuring the fluorescent signal of the portion of the mixture. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the steps of having the controller automatically compare the measured fluorescent signal to the preprogrammed optimal fluorescent signal value and if the measured fluorescent signal is above the optimal fluorescent signal value, sending a communication from the controller to the scale inhibitor pump causing the pump to automatically reduce the amount of the one or more scale inhibitor compositions being pumped into the injection site of the pipeline. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the steps of having the controller automatically compare the measured fluorescent signal to the preprogrammed optimal fluorescent signal value and if the measured fluorescent signal is below the optimal fluorescent signal value, sending a communication from the controller to the scale inhibitor pump causing the pump to automatically increase the amount of the one or more scale inhibitor compositions being pumped into the injection site of the pipeline. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluorescent tag comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl allyloxy propyl naphthalimide quaternary salt, pyrene tetrasulfonic acid, and naphthalenedisulfonic acid. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scale inhibitor composition comprises about 2% by weight of the fluorescent tag. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more scale inhibitor compositions are selected from the group consisting of phosphonates, sulfonates, polymers of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, polyaminopolyethermethylene phosphonate, polysuccinic oligomers, acrylic acid/2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, blends of acrylic acid/2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid with polyaminopolyethermethylene phosphonate, sulfomethylated acrylic acid/acrylamide, blends of sulfomethylated acrylic acid/acrylamide with polyaminopolyethermethylene phosphonate, polymaleic acid, acrylic acid/acrylamide copolymers, polyacrylic acid, trimethylglycine hydrochloride, blends of polyaminopolyethermethylene phosphonate with trimethylglycine hydrochloride, and any combination or salt thereof. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more scale inhibitor compositions are selected from the group consisting of a sulfomethylated acrylic acid/acrylamide copolymer and an acrylic acid/2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid copolymer.
