Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods and devices for processing and voice operated control are provided. The method can include performing a non-difference comparison between a first received sound and a second received sound, determining if speech exists based on the comparison, and transmitting or providing a decision that the speech is present to at least one among the device, a cell phone, a media player, or a portable computing device. Other embodiments are disclosed.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. An earpiece device, comprising: a first microphone operatively coupled to the earpiece device and configured to receive a first sound signal; a second microphone operatively coupled to the earpiece device and configured to receive a second sound signal; a processor operatively coupled to the first microphone and the second microphone, wherein the processor performs operations comprising: performing a non-difference comparison between the first sound signal and the second sound signal, wherein the non-difference comparison is a correlation, a coherence, a cross-correlation, a signal ratio, or a combination thereof, between the first sound signal and the second sound signal; determining if a spoken voice exists based on the non-difference comparison, and providing a decision that the spoken voice is present to the earpiece device, a cell phone, a media player, a portable computing device operatively coupled to the earpiece device, or a combination thereof. 2. The earpiece device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise: assigning a first mixing gain to the first sound signal and a second mixing gain to the second sound signal; applying the first mixing gain to the first sound signal to produce a first filtered sound; applying the second mixing gain to the second sound signal to produce a second filtered sound; mixing the first filtered sound and the second filtered sound to produce a mixed signal; and transmitting the mixed signal to the cell phone, media player, or portable computing device. 3. The earpiece device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise transmitting a mixed signal, a voicing level, or a combination thereof, to a voice monitoring system, a voice recognition system, or a combination thereof. 4. The earpiece device of claim 2 , wherein the operations further comprise transmitting the mixed signal, the voicing level, or a combination thereof, to a voice communication system configured for recording a voice of a wearer of a device. 5. The earpiece device of claim 2 , wherein the operations further comprise managing a delivery of the mixed signal based on one or more aspects of the spoken voice from the non-difference comparison and a volume level of the spoken voice, a voicing level of the spoken voice, a spectral shape of the spoken voice, or a combination thereof. 6. The earpiece device of claim 5 , wherein the first microphone is an ear canal microphone configured to capture internal sounds within an ear canal, and the second microphone is an ambient sound microphone configured to capture sounds within an external environment. 7. The earpiece device of claim 1 , wherein the non-difference comparison comprises cross-correlation analysis between the first sound signal of the earpiece device and the second sound signal of the earpiece. 8. The earpiece device of claim 1 , wherein the non-difference comparison comprises a cross correlation analysis that determines if a peak of the cross correlation is within a predetermined amplitude range and a timing of the peak is within a predetermined time range. 9. The earpiece device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise determining from a voicing level and difference a sealing profile with an ear of a wearer to compensate for any leakage, and estimating sound exposure and recovery times from the sealing profile to safely administer and monitor sound exposure to the device having the sealing profile. 10. The earpiece device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is operatively coupled to a correlation unit, a coherence unit, a spectral analysis unit, or a combination thereof. 11. A method for acoustic sound processing suitable for use with an earpiece device, the method comprising: receiving a first sound signal from a first microphone operatively coupled to the earpiece device; receiving a second sound signal from a second microphone operatively coupled to the earpiece device; by way of a processor operatively coupled to the first microphone and the second microphone: performing a non-difference comparison from the first sound signal and the second sound signal, wherein the non-difference comparison is a correlation, a coherence, a cross-correlation, a signal ratio between the first sound signal and the second sound signal, or a combination thereof; determining if speech exists based on the non-difference comparison, and providing a decision that the speech is present to the ear piece device, a cell phone, a media player, a portable computing device operatively coupled to the earpiece device, or a combination thereof. 12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising: assigning a first mixing gain to the first sound signal and a second mixing gain to the second sound signal; applying the first mixing gain to the first sound signal to produce a first filtered sound; applying the second mixing gain to the second sound signal to produce a second filtered sound; mixing the first filtered sound and the second filtered sound to produce a mixed signal; and transmitting the mixed signal to the cell phone, the media player, the portable computing device, or a combination thereof. 13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising transmitting the mixed signal and the voicing level to a voice monitoring system, a voice recognition system, or a combination thereof. 14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising transmitting the mixed signal, a voicing level, or a combination thereof, to a voice communication system which is configured for recording speech. 15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising managing a delivery of the mixed signal based on one or more aspects of the speech from the non-difference comparison and a volume level of the speech, a voicing level of the speech, a spectral shape of the speech, or a combination thereof. 16. The method of claim 11 , wherein receiving the first sound signal is by way of an ear canal microphone configured to capture internal sounds within an ear canal, and receiving the second sound signal is by way of an ambient sound microphone configured to capture sounds within an external environment. 17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the non-difference comparison is a correlation analysis, a cross-correlation analysis, a coherence analysis, or a combination thereof. 18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the non-difference comparison comprises a cross correlation analysis that determines if a peak of the cross correlation is within a predetermined amplitude range and a timing of the peak is within a predetermined time range. 19. The method of claim 11 , where the non-difference comparison switches a voice activated switch based on a cross correlation analysis and a coherence analysis using inputs from different earpieces. 20. The method of claim 11 , where the non-difference comparison is part of an overall comparison that includes a volume level, a sound pressure level, a voicing level, a correlation, a coherence, a spectral analysis, a signal ratio analysis, or a combination thereof.
