Some embodiments relate to a luer connector comprising a housing having a hollow bore therethrough, a first end, and a second end, a male luer tip supported by the housing configured to rotate with respect to the housing, the luer tip having a first open end and a passageway through the luer tip in fluid communication with the first open end, and a substantially rigid internal member extending into the passageway of the luer tip toward the first open end of the luer tip. In some embodiments, at least one of the luer tip and the internal member can be axially moveable between a first closed position and a second open position relative to the other of the luer tip and the internal member. Further, the luer tip and the internal member can cooperate such that rotation of the luer tip in a first direction relative to the housing increases an axial displacement between the first open end of the luer tip and an end portion of the internal member.

The following is claimed: 1. A closeable male luer connector comprising: a housing having a first end and a second end; the first end of the housing including a male luer tip having an opening in a first end thereof and a passageway through the male luer tip in fluid communication with the opening in the first end thereof; and an internal member extending into the passageway of the male luer tip toward the opening in the first end thereof, the internal member having an opening in a first end thereof and a passageway through the internal member in fluid communication with the opening in the first end thereof; wherein: the internal member is configured to translate axially within the luer tip from a first position in which the first end of the internal member cooperates with the first end of the male luer tip such the connector is in a closed state in that the connector is configured to substantially prevent fluid from flowing into or out of the opening of the male luer tip and a second position in which the connector is in an open state such that the connector is configured to permit fluid to flow into or out of the opening of the male luer tip; and the connector includes a laterally extending member and a rotational member coupled to the laterally extending member, the rotational member being configured to rotate about a longitudinal axis of the connector such that the internal member translates axially along the longitudinal axis of the connector extending between the first and second ends of the housing to transition connector between the open and closed states independent of whether a second implement is engaged with the first end of the housing. 2. The closeable luer connector of claim 1 , further comprising detents, stops, or other features to hold the internal member in an axial position relative to the housing. 3. The closeable luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the laterally extending member passes through an opening in a side wall of the housing. 4. The closeable luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the internal member is rotationally fixed relative to the housing. 5. The closeable luer connector of claim 4 , wherein the internal member and the housing include complementary indexing features that cooperate to keep the internal member rotationally fixed relative to the housing. 6. The closeable luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the internal member comprises an axial opening through at least a portion of the internal member, the axial opening being in fluid communication with the opening in the first end of the internal member. 7. The closeable luer connector of claim 1 , further comprising a seal member between an outer surface of the seal member and an inner surface of the housing that permits the axial translation of the internal member relative to the housing and impedes fluid flow between the outer surface of the seal member and the inner surface of the housing member. 8. The closeable luer connector of claim 6 , further comprising a seal member between an outer surface of the seal member and an inner surface of the housing that permits the axial translation of the internal member relative to the housing and impedes fluid flow between the outer surface of the seal member and the inner surface of the housing member, wherein the seal member is positioned closer to the axial opening of the internal member than the opening in the first end of the internal member. 9. The closeable luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the internal member is biased toward the first position. 10. The closeable luer connector of claim 1 , wherein the rotational member is a dial member encircling the connector. 11. The closeable luer connector of claim 10 , wherein the connector further comprises detents, stops, or other features to bias or stop the dial member at particular predetermined locations corresponding to desired positions of the internal member within the connector. 12. The closeable luer connector of claim 10 , wherein the dial member includes a helically shaped channel configured to slidingly receive the laterally extending member. 13. The closeable luer connector of claim 10 , wherein the dial member is snap fit around the housing.
