The invention claimed is: 1. A lighting device comprising: a heat sink having an annular portion including an annular surface portion delimiting a central aperture, said annular surface portion carrying a plurality of SSL elements; and a bulbous member cooperating with the heat sink, said bulbous member having a first surface portion opposite said SSL elements and a second surface portion extending from said first surface portion through said central aperture; wherein the bulbous member is used as a light guide member for light emitted by the plurality of SSL elements; and wherein the bulbous member comprises a bulbous portion connected to a tapered annular portion by a joining portion including the first surface portion, said tapered annular portion comprising the second surface portion and extending into the heat sink through said central aperture. 2. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the annular portion further comprises a rim extending from the annular surface portion towards the first surface portion of the bulbous member. 3. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the SSL elements are mounted on an annular carrier, said annular carrier being supported by the annular surface portion. 4. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the bulbous member comprises a reflective coating on an inner surface portion centered on an optical axis of the lighting device. 5. The lighting device of claim 4 , wherein said coating comprises TiO 2 . 6. The lighting device of claim 4 , wherein said coating covers a circular section of said inner surface portion, wherein the bulbous member has a maximum diameter, and said circular section has a diameter in the range of 25-50% of said maximum diameter. 7. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the bulbous member is transparent or translucent. 8. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the bulbous member is made of glass or a polymer. 9. The lighting device of claim 8 , wherein the polymer is selected from polycarbonate, polyethylene terephthalate and poly (methyl methacrylate). 10. The lighting device of claim 1 , further comprising a fitting, wherein the heat sink further comprises: a further portion engaging with said fitting; and a plurality of fins extending from the annular portion to said further portion, wherein the plurality of fins is spaced apart such as to define a plurality of light exit windows in between said fins. 11. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the SSL elements are light emitting diodes. 12. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the lighting device is a light bulb. 13. A luminaire comprising the lighting device of claim 1 . 14. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the bulbous member has a wall thickness in the range of 20%-50% of the width of an individual SSL element on said annular surface portion.
