Provided are a method for producing 3-methylglutaraldehyde in a good yield under a mild condition and a novel acetal compound which is useful for carrying out the foregoing method. The method is a production method of 3-methylglutaraldehyde including a step of hydrolyzing a compound represented by the following general formula (1): wherein R 1 and R 2 each independently represent an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or are mutually coupled to represent an alkylene group having 2 to 6 carbon atoms.

The invention claimed is: 1. A production method of 3-methylglutaraldehyde, comprising: hydrolyzing a compound represented by the following general formula (1): wherein R 1 and R 2 each independently represent an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or are mutually coupled to represent an alkylene group having 2 to 6 carbon atoms. 2. The production method according to claim 1 , further comprising: subjecting a compound represented by the following general formula (2) to hydroformylation to obtain the compound represented by the general formula (1): wherein R 3 and R 4 each independently represent an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or are mutually coupled to represent an alkylene group having 2 to 6 carbon atoms. 3. The production method according to claim 2 , further comprising: subjecting 3-methyl-3-buten-1-al to acetalization, to obtain the compound represented by the general formula (2). 4. A compound represented by the following general formula (3): wherein R 5 represents a linear alkylene group having 2 carbon atoms. 5. A compound represented by the following general formula (3): wherein R 5 represents a linear alkylene group having 4-6 carbon atoms.
