Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Described are shoes for ball sports including an upper having an outer surface. An actuator is configured to change at least one surface property of a portion of the outer surface of the upper, and a sensor is configured to be sensitive to movements of the shoe. A processing unit is connected to the actuator and the sensor and configured to process sensor data retrieved from the sensor and to cause the actuator to change the at least one surface property of the portion of the outer surface of the upper if a predetermined event is detected in the sensor data.

That which is claimed is: 1. An article of footwear comprising: an upper comprising an outer layer having an inner surface and an outer surface; and an electroactive polymer arranged under the outer layer and comprising at least one changeable physical property configured to change in response to electrical stimulation, wherein the electroactive polymer is configured to change the at least one surface property of at least a portion of the outer surface of the outer layer of the upper by changing the at least one changeable physical property of the electroactive polymer between a first state and a second state. 2. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the at least one changeable physical property is selected from the consisting of a length, a volume, a thickness, a width, a surface area, a modulus of elasticity, and a modulus of rigidity of the electroactive polymer. 3. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the electroactive polymer is configured to directly change the at least one surface property of the portion of the outer surface by directly engaging the inner surface of the outer layer. 4. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the electroactive polymer is configured to indirectly change the at least one surface property of the portion of the outer surface by indirectly engaging the inner surface of the outer layer through at least one linking element. 5. The article of footwear of claim 4 , wherein the at least one linking element is selected from the group consisting of a latch, a pin, a pre-stressed element, a flap and a fin. 6. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the at least one changeable physical property comprises a first changeable physical property and a second changeable physical property. 7. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the electroactive polymer comprises nanotubes. 8. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the electroactive polymer comprises an electronic electroactive polymer selected from the group consisting of ferroelectric polymers, dielectric elastomers, electro-restrictive polymers, and liquid crystal materials. 9. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the electroactive polymer comprises an ionic electroactive polymer selected from the group consisting of ionomeric polymer-metal composites, ionic polymer gels, conductive polymers, and electrorheological fluids. 10. The article of footwear of claim 1 , further comprising: an actuator configured to electrically stimulate the electroactive polymer; a sensor configured to be sensitive to movements of the article of footwear; and a processing unit connected to the electroactive polymer and the sensor, wherein the processing unit is configured to process sensor data retrieved from the sensor and to cause the actuator to change the at least one surface property of the portion of the outer surface of the upper if a predetermined event is detected in the sensor data. 11. An article of footwear comprising: an upper having an outer surface; an electroactive polymer comprising at least one changeable physical property configured to change in response to electrical stimulation, wherein changing the at least one changeable physical property of the electroactive polymer changes at least one surface property of a portion of the outer surface of the upper; a sensor configured to be sensitive to movements of the article of footwear; and a processing unit connected to the electroactive polymer and the sensor, wherein the processing unit is configured to process sensor data retrieved from the sensor and to cause the electroactive polymer to change the at least one surface property of the portion of the outer surface of the upper if a predetermined event is detected in the sensor data. 12. The article of footwear of claim 11 , wherein the at least one changeable physical property is selected from the consisting of a length, a volume, a thickness, a width, a surface area, a modulus of elasticity, and a modulus of rigidity of the electroactive polymer. 13. The article of footwear of claim 12 , wherein the at least one changeable physical property comprises a first changeable physical property and a second changeable physical property. 14. The article of footwear of claim 11 , wherein the electroactive polymer is configured to directly change the at least one surface property of the portion of the outer surface by directly engaging an inner surface of an outer layer of the outer layer. 15. The article of footwear of claim 11 , wherein the electroactive polymer is configured to indirectly change the at least one surface property of the portion of the outer surface by indirectly engaging an inner surface of the upper through at least one linking element, and wherein the at least one linking element is selected from the group consisting of a latch, a pin, a pre-stressed element, a flap and a fin. 16. An article of footwear comprising: an upper comprising an outer layer having an inner surface and an outer surface; and an electroactive polymer comprising at least one changeable physical property configured to be changed in response to electrical stimulation, wherein the electroactive polymer is configured change to at least one surface property of at least a portion of the outer surface of the outer layer of the upper by changing the at least one changeable physical property of the electroactive polymer between a first state and a second state. 17. The article of footwear of claim 16 , wherein the at least one changeable physical property comprises a first changeable physical property and a second changeable physical property. 18. The article of footwear of claim 16 , wherein the electroactive polymer is configured to directly change the at least one surface property of the portion of the outer surface by directly engaging the inner surface of the outer layer. 19. The article of footwear of claim 16 , wherein the electroactive polymer is selected from the group consisting of nanotubes, electronic electroactive polymers, and ionic electroactive polymers. 20.
