The invention relates to compounds of formula I: where a, R 1 , and R 3-6 are as defined in the specification, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. The compounds of formula I are serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. The invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising such compounds; methods of using such compounds; and process and intermediates for preparing such compounds.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of inhibiting norepinephrine reuptake in a mammal, the method comprising administering to the mammal a norepinephrine transporter-inhibiting amount of a compound of the formula: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compound is administered as a hydrochloride salt. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mammal is a human. 4. A method of inhibiting norepinephrine reuptake in a mammal, the method comprising administering to the mammal a pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a norepinephrine transporter-inhibiting amount of a compound of the formula: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the compound is administered as a hydrochloride salt. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the mammal is a human. 7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition contains about 1 milligram to about 20 milligrams of the compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 8. The method of claim 4 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition contains about 1 milligram to about 15 milligrams of the compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 9. The method of claim 4 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition contains about 1 milligram to about 10 milligrams of the compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 10. The method of claim 4 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered orally.
