Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of sharing recording capability on a network, the network having a server supporting at least a recording DVR and a receiving DVR, the recording and receiving DVRs being in different households, the method comprising: (a) determining that the receiving DVR is unable to record the content at a certain time; and (b) identifying that the recording DVR is able to provide the receiving DVR with a recording of the content; (c) recording the content on the recording DVR at the certain time; and (d) transmitting the content from the recording DVR to the receiving DVR after the certain time.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: receiving, at a recording digital video recorder (DVR), one or more commands identifying particular content recorded on the recording DVR, identifying a receiving DVR, and requesting that the particular content be offered to the receiving DVR; offering, after receiving the one or more commands, the particular content to the receiving DVR; receiving, at the recording DVR, authorization from the receiving DVR after the offering of the particular content; transmitting the particular content from the recording DVR to the receiving DVR based on determining that the receiving DVR has sufficient storage space available; deleting the particular content from the recording DVR after the particular content is transmitted to the receiving DVR; and screening an identity of a user associated with the receiving DVR from a user associated with the recording DVR. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: screening, by the recording DVR, from the user associated with the recording DVR, that the particular content is stored on the recording DVR. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: screening, by the recording DVR, from the user associated with the recording DVR, information about a stored copy of the particular content on the receiving DVR. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: storing, by the receiving DVR, a copy of the particular content; and inhibiting access to the stored copy of the particular content by the user associated with the receiving DVR. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: storing, by the receiving DVR, a copy of the particular content; and inhibiting access to the stored copy of the particular content by the user associated with the recording DVR. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the screening the identity of the user associated with the receiving DVR comprises screening an association between the user associated with the receiving DVR and the particular content. 7. An apparatus comprising: one or more processors; and memory storing computer-readable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the apparatus to: receive, at a recording digital video recorder (DVR), one or more commands identifying particular content recorded on the recording DVR, identify a receiving DVR, and request that the particular content be offered to the receiving DVR; offer, after receiving the one or more commands, the particular content to the receiving DVR; receive, at the recording DVR, authorization from the receiving DVR after the offer of the particular content; transmit the particular content from the recording DVR based on determining that the receiving DVR has sufficient storage space available; delete the particular content from the recording DVR after the particular content is transmitted to the receiving DVR; and screen an identity of a user associated with the receiving DVR from a user associated with the recording DVR. 8. The apparatus of claim 7 , the memory storing computer-readable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the apparatus to: screen, by the recording DVR, from the user associated with the recording DVR, that the particular content is stored on the recording DVR. 9. The apparatus of claim 7 , the memory storing computer-readable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the apparatus to: screen, by the recording DVR, from the user associated with the recording DVR, information about a stored copy of the particular content on the receiving DVR. 10. The apparatus of claim 7 , the memory storing computer-readable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the apparatus to: store, by the receiving DVR, a copy of the particular content; and inhibit access to the stored copy of the particular content by the user associated with the receiving DVR. 11. The apparatus of claim 7 , the memory storing computer-readable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the apparatus to: store, by the receiving DVR, a copy of the particular content; and inhibit access to the stored copy of the particular content by the user associated with the recording DVR. 12. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the screen the identity of the user associated with the receiving DVR comprises screen an association between the user associated with the receiving DVR and the particular content. 13. A method comprising: receiving, at a recording digital video recorder (DVR), one or more commands identifying particular content recorded on the recording DVR, identifying a receiving DVR, and requesting that the particular content be offered to the receiving DVR; determining a plurality of interconnections between the recording DVR and corresponding ones of a plurality of DVRs; selecting a receiving DVR based on the receiving DVR having a shortest interconnection of the plurality of interconnections between the recording DVR and the corresponding ones of a plurality of DVRs, and requesting that the particular content be offered to the receiving DVR; offering, after receiving the one or more commands, the particular content to the receiving DVR; receiving, at the recording DVR, authorization from the receiving DVR after the offering of the particular content; transmitting the particular content from the recording DVR based on determining that the receiving DVR has sufficient storage space available; and screening an identity of a user associated with the receiving DVR from a user associated with the recording DVR. 14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: receiving, at the recording DVR, authorization from the receiving DVR after the offering of the particular content. 15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: screening, by the recording DVR, from the user associated with the recording DVR, that the particular content is stored on the recording DVR. 16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: screening, by the recording DVR, from the user associated with the recording DVR, information about a stored copy of the particular content on the receiving DVR. 17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: storing, by the receiving DVR, a copy of the particular content; and inhibiting access to the stored copy of the particular content by the user associated with the receiving DVR. 18. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: storing, by the receiving DVR, a copy of the particular content; and inhibiting access to the stored copy of the particular content by the user associated with the recording DVR. 19. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: deleting the particular content from the recording DVR after the particular content is transmitted to the receiving DVR.
