Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Electric motors are disclosed. The motors are preferably for use in an automated vehicle, although any one or more of a variety of motor uses are suitable. The motors include lift, turntable, and locomotion motors.

What is claimed is: 1. A stator for use in an electric motor, said stator comprising: a core; an electrically insulative covering component at least in part overlying the core; wiring wound about the core and the covering component; and a thermal protector assembly including a thermal protector and a bracket component supporting the thermal protector, said bracket component being coupled to the covering component so as to position the protector at least substantially adjacent the wiring, a first one of said components including a post, a second one of said components defining a post-receiving opening, said post extending through the post-receiving opening to intercouple the components, said components cooperatively presenting a latch-type connection that includes a resiliently deflectable latch associated with one of the components and a latch-receiving recess associated with the other of the components, said latch including a catch that is removably received within the latch-receiving recess, said core defining an axis, one of said post and said catch restricting relative radial movement between the components, the other of said post and said catch restricting relative axial movement between the components. 2. The stator as claimed in claim 1 , said bracket component positioning the protector in contact with the wiring. 3. The stator as claimed in claim 1 , said wiring forming a plurality of coils, said bracket component positioning the thermal protector at least substantially between adjacent ones of said coils. 4. The stator as claimed in claim 3 , said stator including a plurality of said thermal protector assemblies, each of said bracket components positioning a corresponding one of the thermal protectors at least substantially between corresponding adjacent ones of said coils. 5. The stator as claimed in claim 4 , said plurality of coils including A-phase, B-phase, and C-phase coils, a first one of said bracket components positioning a first one of said thermal protectors at least substantially between an A-phase coil and an adjacent B-phase coil, a second one of said bracket components positioning a second one of said thermal protectors at least substantially between a B-phase coil and an adjacent C-phase coil. 6. The stator as claimed in claim 1 , said stator including a plurality of said thermal protector assemblies, said thermal protectors being connected in series. 7. The stator as claimed in claim 1 , said post extending generally axially and restricting relative radial and circumferential movement between the components. 8. The stator as claimed in claim 7 , said covering including a generally axially extending pillar, said post extending from said pillar, with the pillar defining a shoulder adjacent the post, said shoulder supporting the bracket component and restricting axial movement between the components. 9. The stator as claimed in claim 1 , said post including an endmost portion, said endmost portion being heat-staked to the covering. 10. The stator as claimed in claim 1 , said bracket component including a mounting portion comprising a generally radially extending mounting plate, said mounting plate defining the post-receiving opening. 11. The stator as claimed in claim 1 , said first one of said components including a plurality of said posts, said second one of said components defining a plurality of said post-receiving openings, said posts extending through corresponding ones of the post-receiving openings to couple the bracket and the covering. 12. The stator as claimed in claim 1 , said covering component comprising a discrete end cap secured relative to the core. 13. The stator as claimed in claim 12 , said covering component comprising a plurality of said discrete end caps. 14. The stator as claimed in claim 13 , said core including a plurality of generally radially extending teeth, each of said discrete end caps fitted over at least a part of a corresponding one of said teeth. 15. The stator as claimed in claim 1 , said bracket component including a case, said case including a base and a pair of side walls extending from the base, said base and said side walls cooperatively at least in part surrounding the thermal protector. 16. The stator as claimed in claim 15 , said case including a resiliently deflectable spring arm yieldably engaging the protector so as to restrict shifting of the thermal protector. 17. The stator as claimed in 15 , said case including a pair of side hooks extending from the base between the side walls, said side hooks engaging the thermal protector. 18. The stator as claimed in claim 15 , said thermal protector including a sleeve, said case engaging the sleeve. 19. The stator as claimed in claim 1 , said latch including a generally axially extending latch arm presenting an end, said catch being disposed adjacent said end, said catch restricting relative axial movement between the components. 20. The stator as claimed in claim 1 , said latch including a latch arm presenting an end, said catch being disposed adjacent said end, said latch arm extending at least substantially parallel to said post. 21. The stator as claimed in claim 1 , said first one of said components including a pair of said posts, either said catch or said latch-receiving recess being disposed between said pair of said posts. 22. The stator as claimed in claim 7 , said latch including a generally axially extending latch arm presenting an end, said catch being disposed adjacent said end, said catch restricting relative axial movement between the components. 23. A stator for use in an electric motor, said stator comprising: a core defining an axis; an electrically insulative covering component at least in part overlying the core; wiring wound about the core and the covering component, said wiring presenting a circumferential wiring margin; and a thermal protector assembly including a thermal protector and a bracket component supporting the thermal protector, a first one of said components including a generally axially extending post, a second one of said components including a mounting portion comprising a generally radially extending mounting plate, said mounting plate defining a post-receiving opening, said post extending through the post-receiving opening to intercouple the components, said components being coupled so as to position the protector at least substantially axially adjacent the wiring and at least partly radially inboard of the circumferential wiring margin.
