Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method for operating a printing device and an image generation kit are disclosed. The image generation kit is adapted to controllably eject individual drops of a gating agent, and is operating the image generation kit in synchronism with a principal substance application apparatus to deposit the drops of the gating agent on a substrate and to transfer a principal substance to the substrate. The drops of the gating agent on the substrate define image and non-image areas of the substrate, the image and non-image areas of the substrate are undefined until the drops of the gating agent are deposited thereon, and the substrate with the principal substance transferred to the image areas is an end product of the printing device.

First claim

We claim: 1. An image generation kit for use with a print device, comprising: means for transporting a print medium through a print device; a first application apparatus for depositing individual drops of a gating agent onto a surface of the print medium to define image and non-image areas of the print medium, wherein the deposition of each drop is individually controlled, and the image and non-image areas of the print medium are undefined until the drops of the gating agent are deposited thereon; and means for mounting the image generation kit on the print device; wherein a second application apparatus of the print device applies a principal substance to the image areas of the print medium as the print medium is transported to form a printed image on the print medium, wherein the print medium having the principal substance applied thereto is an output of the print device. 2. An image generation kit, comprising: an application apparatus adapted to eject individual drops of a material; and a mounting assembly including at least one side member and a holder for the application apparatus supported by the at least one side member; wherein the at least one side member is adapted to secure the mounting assembly directly to and dispose the application apparatus upstream of a lithographic printing deck proximate a print medium; and wherein the mounting assembly includes a collar adapted to attach the at least one side member to the lithographic printing deck. 3. The image generation kit of claim 2 , wherein the mounting assembly includes a further side member and the holder for the application apparatus is disposed between the at least one side member and the further side member. 4. The image generation kit of claim 2 , in combination with a gating agent, wherein the application apparatus deposits drops of the gating agent on the print medium to define image and non-image areas of the print medium. 5. The image generation kit and the gating agent of claim 4 , in combination with a principal substance, wherein the drops of the gating agent are deposited in the image areas and the drops of the gating agent aid transfer of a principal substance from the lithographic printing deck to the image areas. 6. The image generation kit and the gating agent of claim 4 , wherein the application apparatus deposits the drops of the gating agent in the non-image areas of the print medium. 7. The image generation kit and the gating agent of claim 6 , in combination with a principal substance, wherein the drops of the gating agent substantially prevent transfer of the principal substance to the non-image areas of the print medium. 8. The image generation kit of claim 2 , further comprising a controller to coordinate operation of the application apparatus with the operation of the applicator of the lithographic printing deck. 9. The image generation kit of claim 2 , in combination with the lithographic printing deck, wherein the lithographic printing deck includes one or more of a plate cylinder and a blanket cylinder, and a principal substance is transferred to the print medium from one or more of the plate cylinder and the blanket cylinder to produce a printed print medium. 10. The image generation kit and the lithographic printing deck of claim 9 , wherein a further principal substance is applied to the printed print medium as the printed print medium is transported. 11. The image generation kit and the lithographic printing deck of claim 9 , wherein post-processing of the printed print medium is undertaken and wherein the printed print medium is a component of one of a direct mailing, an advertisement, a statement, a bill, a personalized book, a periodical, a publication, a poster, and a display. 12. The image generation kit of claim 2 , further including means for transporting the print medium past the application apparatus. 13. The image generation kit of claim 2 , wherein the mounting assembly comprises a roller coupled to the at least one side member, and a print medium is transportable between the roller and the application apparatus. 14. The image generation kit of claim 2 , further including a fastener and the at least one side member includes an aperture, wherein the fastener is received in the aperture to fasten the at least one side member to the lithographic printing deck.
