What is claimed is: 1. Apparatus for distracting a hip joint of a patient, said apparatus comprising: a perineal post for engagement with a leg of the patient, said perineal post comprising a first rigid portion and a second rigid portion, wherein said first rigid portion and said second rigid portion together form a first shape of the perineal post, wherein said first rigid portion is configured for mounting to a table, and further wherein said second rigid portion is movable relative to said first rigid portion so as form a second shape of the perineal post relative to a patient supported on the table. 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said second rigid portion of said perineal post is movable relative to said first rigid portion of said perineal post so as to apply a force to the leg of the patient. 3. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said second rigid portion of said perineal post is movable relative to said first rigid portion of said perineal post so as to modify a shape of a fulcrum against which the leg of the patient is levered. 4. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising a mechanism for moving said second rigid portion of said perineal post relative to said first rigid portion of said perineal post. 5. Apparatus according to claim 4 wherein said mechanism is a manually-operated mechanism. 6. Apparatus according to claim 4 wherein said mechanism is a motorized mechanism. 7. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said first rigid portion of said perineal post is configured for rotatable mounting to the table. 8. Apparatus according to claim 7 further comprising a mechanism for rotating said second rigid portion of said perineal post relative to the table. 9. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said first rigid portion of said perineal post is configured for telescoping mounting to the table. 10. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said first rigid portion of said perineal post is configured for tiltable mounting to the table. 11. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising at least one sensor for sensing a condition relating to the patient. 12. Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein said at least one sensor is disposed on said second rigid portion of said perineal post. 13. Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein said at least one sensor is configured to sense one from the group consisting of: force applied to the patient, pressure applied to the patient, length of time that distraction has been applied to the patient, blood flow through a leg of the patient, temperature of the patient, and nerve conduction within the leg of the patient. 14. Apparatus according to claim 11 further comprising a display for presenting data acquired by said at least one sensor. 15. Apparatus according to claim 14 wherein said display is mounted to said first rigid portion of said perineal post. 16. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein at least one of said first rigid portion of said perineal post and said second rigid portion of said perineal post comprises internal foam padding, and further wherein said internal foam padding comprises at least one region of more compliant foam padding and at least one region of less compliant foam padding. 17. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising at least one buttress configured for engagement with a leg of the patient. 18. Apparatus according to claim 17 wherein said perineal post is configured to engage one side of a leg of the patient, and further wherein said at least one buttress is configured to engage a second side of the leg opposite to the side of the leg which is engaged by the perineal post. 19. Apparatus according to claim 17 wherein said perineal post and said at least one buttress are mounted to a plate, and further wherein said plate is configured for mounting to the table. 20. Apparatus according to claim 19 wherein said plate is pivotally mounted to the table. 21. Apparatus according to claim 20 wherein said plate is adjustably pivotally mounted to the table so as to allow adjustment of a position of said perineal post and said at least one buttress relative to a patient supported on the table. 22. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising a knee distraction device for supporting a knee of a patient, and further wherein said knee distraction device is configured for mounting to the table. 23. Apparatus for distracting a hip joint of a patient, said apparatus comprising: a perineal post for engagement with a leg of the patient, said perineal post comprising a first rigid portion and a second rigid portion, wherein said first rigid portion is configured for mounting to a table, and further wherein said second rigid portion is configured to be diagonally movable relative to said first rigid portion so as apply a diagonally-directed force to the leg of the patient supported on the table. 24. Apparatus for distracting a hip joint of a patient, said apparatus comprising: a perineal post for engagement with a leg of the patient, said perineal post comprising a first rigid portion and a second rigid portion, wherein the first rigid portion and the second rigid portion together form a first shape of the perineal post, wherein said first rigid portion is configured for mounting to a table, and further wherein said second rigid portion is configured to be diagonally movable relative to said first rigid portion so as form a second shape of the perineal post, whereby to apply a diagonally-directed force to the leg of the patient supported on the table.
