Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A bipolar output charge pump circuit having a network of switching paths for selectively connecting an input node and a reference node for connection to an input voltage, a first pair of output nodes and a second pair of output nodes, and two pairs of flying capacitor nodes, and a controller for controlling the switching of the network of switching paths. The controller is operable to control the network of switching paths when in use with two flying capacitors connected to the two pairs of flying capacitor nodes, to provide a first bipolar output voltage at the first pair of output nodes and a second bipolar output voltage at the second pair of bipolar output nodes.

What is claimed is: 1. An audio output chain, comprising: a charge pump, a first component supplied, in use, with a first bipolar supply voltage from said charge pump; and a second component supplied, in use, with a second bipolar supply voltage from said charge pump. 2. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first component comprises a first amplifier stage of a playback path of the audio output chain. 3. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the second component precedes the first component in the playback path of the audio output chain. 4. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the second component comprises a second amplifier stage of the playback path of the audio output chain. 5. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the second component comprises a digital to analogue converter of the playback path of the audio output chain. 6. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the second component comprises a digital signal processing circuit of the playback path of the audio output chain. 7. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the charge pump is configured such that the first bipolar output voltage is a selectively variable bipolar voltage. 8. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 7 , comprising a control block for controlling said charge pump controller so as to control the first bipolar supply voltage, wherein control block generates said at least one control signal based on an indication of a level of audio signal input to the audio output chain and/or a gain applied by the audio output chain. 9. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the charge pump is configured such that the second bipolar supply voltage is a selectively variable bipolar voltage, wherein the second bipolar supply voltage is variable independently of the first bipolar supply voltage. 10. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 9 , comprising a control block for controlling said charge pump controller so as to control the first bipolar supply voltage and the second bipolar supply voltage, wherein said control block generates at least one control signal based on an indication of a level of audio signal input to the audio output chain and/or a gain applied by the audio output chain. 11. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the control block is operable to control the charge pump to selectively control the first bipolar supply voltage to be one of +/−3VV, +/−2VV, +/−VV, +/−VV/2, +/−VV/3, +/−VV/4, +/−VV/5 or +/−VV/6, where VV is an input voltage to the charge pump, and to selectively control the second bipolar supply voltage to be one of +/−VV or +/−VV/2. 12. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the charge pump is configured such that the second bipolar output voltage is a fixed bipolar output voltage. 13. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the charge pump circuit comprises: an input node and a reference node for connection to an input voltage; first and second pairs of output nodes; two pairs of flying capacitor nodes; a network of switching paths for interconnecting said nodes; and a controller operable to control the network of switching paths when in use with two flying capacitors connected to the two pairs of flying capacitor nodes to provide said first bipolar supply voltage at the first pair of output nodes and said second bipolar supply voltage at the second pair of output nodes. 14. An audio output chain as claimed in claim 13 , wherein the network of switching paths comprises at least a first NMOS switch formed on a first region of a semiconductor substrate wherein the first region of the semiconductor substrate is isolated from the rest of the substrate by one or more n-well regions. 15.
