Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A display, as for an electronic gaming machine, includes one or more rotatable mechanical reels including at least one variable displaying position at which the display may be varied. Content is displayed at the variable displaying position when the variable displaying position registers with the display. One or more reels can include a reel strip which includes at one location a pre-printed symbol and at another location a window. A video display can be arranged, configured and controlled by a processor to cast a display at the inside of the reel to impart light and video effects to pre-printed symbol locations or to cast video content through the reel strip window.

The invention claimed is: 1. A gaming machine comprising: a support structure; a plurality of electronic displays secured to the said support structure; a processor configured to control each of said plurality of electronic displays to selectively display at least one of a video content and a backlighting effect; and a mechanical reel rotatably mounted to the support structure for a rotational movement relative to the electronic displays, said mechanical reel having an outer periphery defining a plurality of symbol positions and including a plurality of windows, a first window of said plurality of windows being disposed at a first symbol position and through which a first electronic display of said electronic displays is viewable; a display window through which a predetermined number of the symbol positions of the mechanical reel is viewable; and wherein, when the mechanical reel stops to align the first window with said first electronic display, said processor is further configured to control said first electronic display to display said video content through said first window, and when the mechanical reel is spinning, said processor is further configured to control a second electronic display of said electronic displays to intermittently display said backlighting effect through one of the symbol positions adjacent the first window timed with the rotational movement of said mechanical reel to produce a flashing effect through the one adjacent symbol position, said one of the symbol positions having a light transmission portion and providing a symbol portion. 2. A gaming machine as claimed in claim 1 wherein at least a part of the plurality of electronic displays is mounted within the mechanical reel. 3. A gaming machine as claimed in claim 1 wherein all of the displays of the plurality of electronic displays are mounted within the mechanical reel. 4. A gaming machine as claimed in claim 1 wherein the outer periphery includes one or more of a symbol, an animation, and a video display. 5. A gaming machine as claimed in claim 1 wherein the plurality of electronic displays are selected from the group comprising a TFT, an OLED, and an LCD. 6. A gaming machine as claimed in claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic displays comprises a projector component. 7. A gaming machine as claimed in claim 1 wherein said light transmission portion is a translucent portion. 8. A gaming machine as claimed in claim 1 , and further comprising a stop mechanism configured to stop the mechanical reel at one of a plurality of stop positions. 9. A gaming machine as claimed in claim 1 , and wherein the support structure comprises a first support member to which the mechanical reel is mounted and a second support member to which the plurality of electronic displays are mounted. 10. A gaming machine as claimed in claim 1 , and further comprising a driver configured to drive the mechanical reel for rotational positioning relative to the plurality of electronic displays. 11. A gaming machine as claimed in claim 10 , and further comprising a stepper motor configured to drive the mechanical reel and a drive controller configured to stop the mechanical reel at a desired stop position. 12. A gaming machine comprising: a support structure; a plurality of electronic displays secured to the said support structure; a processor configured to control each of said plurality of electronic displays to selectively display at least one of a video content and a backlighting effect; and a mechanical reel rotatably supported by the support structure for rotational movement about the plurality of electronic displays, wherein the mechanical reel includes an outer periphery defining a plurality of symbol positions including a first window through which content of a first electronic display of the plurality of electronic displays is visible when the first window is aligned with the first electronic display; a display window through which a predetermined number of the symbol positions of the mechanical reel is viewable; and wherein, when the mechanical reel stops to align the first window with the first electronic display, the processor is configured to control said first electronic display to display the video content through the first window, and when the mechanical reel is spinning, said processor is further configured to control a second electronic display of said electronic displays to intermittently display said backlighting effect timed with the rotational movement through a symbol position adjacent the first window to produce a flashing effect through the adjacent symbol position. 13. A gaming machine as claimed in claim 12 , and further comprising a reel controller for controlling stopping of the mechanical reel. 14. An electronic gaming machine comprising: a gaming machine housing; a processor; a plurality of electronic display devices being disposed in said gaming machine housing and controllable by the processor, at least one electronic display device of said plurality of electronic display devices being controllable to selectively display a video content and a backlighting effect; a support structure; a mechanical reel rotatably mounted to the support structure for rotational movement relative to the electronic display devices, said mechanical reel having an outer periphery defining a plurality of symbol positions including a first window disposed at a first symbol position through which a first electronic display device of the plurality of electronic display devices is viewable, and said one of the symbol positions having a light transmission portion and providing a symbol portion; a display window through which a predetermined number of the symbol positions of the mechanical reel is viewable; and wherein, when the mechanical reel stops to align the first window with said first electronic display device, the processor is configured to control said first electronic display device to display said video content through said first window, and when the mechanical reel is spinning, said processor is further configured to control a second electronic display device of said plurality of electronic display devices to intermittently display said backlighting effect through one of the symbol positions adjacent the first window timed with the rotational movement of said mechanical reel to produce a flashing effect through the one adjacent symbol position. 15. An electronic gaming machine as claimed in claim 14 , and further comprising a reel controller for controlling a stopping position of the mechanical reel. 16. An electronic gaming machine as claimed in claim 14 , and further comprising a content selector for selecting the content to be displayed by the plurality of electronic display devices. 17. An electronic gaming machine as claimed in claim 16 wherein the content selector also selects a symbol to be displayed by the mechanical reel. 18. A gaming device comprising: a cabinet; a plurality of reel assemblies, each of the reel assemblies comprising a plurality of symbol positions, said one of the symbol positions having a light transmission portion and providing a symbol portion said symbol positions having a plurality of windows, a first window of said plurality of windows being disposed at a first symbol position; a plurality of electronic displays associated with one of the plurality of reel assemblies, a first electronic display of said plurality of electronic displays is viewable through the first window; a computer processor configured to control each of s
