Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A throttle body fuel injection system including a throttle body with at least one air intake, a fuel injector coupled to the throttle body at a fuel port and an annular ring coupled to the cylindrical inner wall of the air intake. The annular ring includes a primary fuel discharge orifice adjacent to the fuel port and a plurality of secondary fuel discharge orifices arranged radially around the annular ring for spraying atomized fuel into the air intake.

What we claim is: 1. A fuel injection throttle body of an internal combustion engine with a reciprocating piston, comprising: an air intake including a cylindrical inner wall disposed in a said throttle body; an electromechanically controlled fuel injector coupled to the throttle body at a fuel port; and an annular ring coupled to the cylindrical inner wall of the air intake, wherein the annular ring comprises: a plurality of secondary fuel discharge orifices; a single primary fuel discharge orifice and the plurality of secondary fuel discharge orifices arranged radially around the annular ring, wherein said single primary fuel discharge orifice is larger than said plurality of secondary discharge orifices; wherein the annular ring consists of the single primary fuel discharge orifice being adjacent to the fuel port; and an annular channel that communicatively couples the fuel port and the primary fuel discharge orifice and the plurality of secondary fuel discharge orifices; wherein the fuel injector provides positively pressurized fuel through the fuel port into the annular channel, and the primary fuel discharge orifice and the plurality of secondary fuel discharge orifices atomize and spray the fuel into the air intake. 2. The fuel injection throttle body of claim 1 , wherein the primary fuel discharge orifice is larger than each of the plurality of secondary fuel discharge orifices. 3. The fuel injection throttle body of claim 1 , wherein the annular ring is disposed in the air intake below a throttle plate. 4. The fuel injection throttle body of claim 1 , wherein the fuel injector is substantially perpendicular to a center axis of the cylindrical inner wall of the air intake. 5. The fuel injection throttle body of claim 1 , wherein the primary fuel discharge orifice has an orifice shape selected from the group consisting of a circular orifice shape, an ovular orifice shape, an elliptical orifice shape, and a polygonal orifice shape. 6. The fuel injection throttle body of claim 1 , wherein the secondary fuel discharge orifices have an orifice shape selected from the group consisting of a circular orifice shape, an ovular orifice shape, an elliptical orifice shape, and a polygonal orifice shape. 7. The fuel injection throttle body of claim 1 , wherein the primary fuel discharge orifice has a 0.28 to 0.40 inch wide by 0.155 inch high ovular orifice shape, and each of the plurality of secondary fuel discharge orifices have a 0.047 to 0.100 inch diameter circular orifice shape. 8. The fuel injection throttle body of claim 1 , wherein the primary fuel discharge orifice and each of the plurality of secondary fuel discharge orifices have an angular separation of 20 to 38 degrees from an adjacent orifice. 9. The fuel injection throttle body of claim 1 , wherein the primary fuel discharge orifice and the secondary fuel discharge orifices are positioned and sized such that between 40% and 60% of the fuel enters the air intake through the primary fuel discharge orifice. 10. A throttle body with annular fuel injection of an internal combustion engine with a reciprocating piston comprising: an air intake including a cylindrical inner wall disposed in a said throttle body; an electromechanically controlled fuel injector coupled to the throttle body at a fuel port; and an annular ring coupled to the cylindrical inner wall of the air intake, wherein the annular ring comprises: a plurality of fuel discharge orifices arranged radially around the annular ring consisting of a single primary orifice; said plurality of fuel discharge orifices having a plurality of secondary orifices which are smaller than said single primary orifice; and an annular channel that communicatively couples the fuel port and the plurality of fuel discharge orifices; wherein the fuel injector provides positively pressurized fuel through the fuel port into the annular channel, and the plurality of fuel discharge orifices atomize and spray the fuel into the air intake. 11. The throttle body with annular fuel injection of claim 10 , wherein the annular ring is disposed in the air intake below a throttle plate. 12. The throttle body with annular fuel injection of claim 10 , wherein the fuel injector is substantially perpendicular to a center axis of the cylindrical inner wall of the air intake. 13. The throttle body with annular fuel injection of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the plurality of fuel discharge orifices has an orifice shape selected from the group consisting of a circular orifice shape, an ovular orifice shape, an elliptical orifice shape, and a polygonal orifice shape. 14. The throttle body with annular fuel injection of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the plurality of fuel discharge orifices has a 0.28 to 0.40 inch wide by 0.155 inch high ovular orifice shape. 15. The throttle body with annular fuel injection of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the plurality of fuel discharge orifices has a 0.047 to 0.100 inch diameter circular orifice shape. 16. The throttle body with annular fuel injection of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of fuel discharge orifices an angular separation of 20 to 38 degrees from an adjacent orifice.
