Provided herein are estolide base oils and oligomeric compounds prepared from processes that include cross metathesis. Exemplary processes include the preparation of terminally-unsaturated fatty acids by cross metathesis, and the subsequent oligomerization of terminally-unsaturated fatty acids to provide estolide compounds, such as the process set forth below:

The invention claimed is: 1. A compound of Formula I: wherein x is, independently for each occurrence, an integer selected from 0 to 20; y is, independently for each occurrence, an integer selected from 0 to 20; n is an integer equal to or greater than 0; R 1 is an optionally substituted, branched or unbranched alkyl that is saturated or unsaturated, and branched or unbranched; and R 2 is selected from hydrogen and an optionally substituted C 2 to C 22 alkyl that is saturated or unsaturated, and branched or unbranched, wherein each fatty acid chain residue of said at least one compound is independently optionally substituted, and wherein, for at least one fatty acid chain residue, x is an integer selected from 7 and 8 and y is an integer selected from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. 2. The compound according to claim 1 , wherein x is selected from 7 and 8 for each occurrence. 3. The compound according to claim 1 , wherein R 1 an optionally substituted C 1 to C 22 alkyl that is saturated or unsaturated, and branched or unbranched. 4. The compound according to claim 1 , wherein each fatty acid chain residue is unsubstituted. 5. The compound according to claim 4 , wherein n is selected from 0 to 20. 6. The compound according to claim 5 , wherein R 1 an unsubstituted C 7 to C 17 alkyl that is saturated and branched or unbranched. 7. The compound according to claim 6 , wherein R 1 is unbranched. 8. The compound according to claim 6 , wherein R 2 an unsubstituted C 1 to C 22 alkyl that is saturated, and branched or unbranched. 9. The compound according to claim 8 , wherein R 2 is a branched C 6 to C 12 alkyl. 10. The compound of claim 4 , wherein R 1 is a C 9 to C 16 alkyl that is unsubstituted and unbranched. 11. The compound of claim 10 , wherein x is selected from 7 and 8 for each occurrence. 12. The compound of claim 11 , wherein y is selected from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 for each occurrence. 13. The compound of claim 12 , wherein R 1 is saturated. 14. The compound of claim 13 , wherein R 2 is an unsubstituted C 2 to C 22 alkyl that is saturated or unsaturated, and branched or unbranched. 15. The compound of claim 14 , wherein R 2 is saturated. 16. The compound of claim 4 , wherein R 2 is an unsubstituted C 2 to C 22 alkyl that is saturated or unsaturated, and branched or unbranched.
