Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A device for inducing production of tears may include a body extending from a proximal end to a distal end. The body may be configured for insertion through a puncta of a subject. The device also may include a stimulus delivery mechanism positioned between the proximal end and the distal end and an induction coil operably coupled to the stimulus delivery mechanism. Further, the device may include an external controller wirelessly coupled to the induction coil for inductively transferring energy to the induction coil.

The invention claimed is: 1. A device for inducing production of tears, comprising: a body extending from a proximal end to a distal end, wherein the body is configured for insertion through a punctum of a subject; a stimulus delivery mechanism positioned between the proximal end and the distal end; and a faceplate adjacent the proximal end of the body, the faceplate including a power receptor at least partially disposed therein or thereon; wherein the faceplate abuts, and is located external to, the punctum when the body is inserted through the punctum; wherein, upon transfer of energy from an external device to the power receptor, tissue of a nasolacrimal drainage system of the subject is stimulated by the stimulus delivery mechanism to induce the production of tears. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the stimulus delivery mechanism includes a conductor. 3. The device of claim 2 , further including a plurality of conductors positioned between the proximal end and the distal end of the body. 4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the power receptor is operably coupled to the stimulus delivery mechanism. 5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the body is configured for direct contact with a portion of a nasolacrimal drainage system of a subject. 6. The device of claim 1 , further including a sensor configured for sensing one or more of biochemical properties of tears, placement of the body, and operation of the stimulus delivery mechanism. 7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the sensor is configured to detect a degree of conductivity in a nasolacrimal duct of the subject. 8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the power receptor is a coil. 9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the stimulus delivery mechanism comprises multiple zones, each of which includes an electrode. 10. The device of claim 9 , further comprising: a first electrode arranged about the circumference of the body at a first axial location; and a second electrode, which is axially spaced apart from the first electrode and arranged about the circumference of the body at a second axial location. 11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the power receptor is disposed in or on the faceplate. 12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the power receptor comprises a photo-active material. 13. A device for inducing production of tears, comprising: a body extending from a proximal end to a distal end, wherein the body is configured for insertion within a portion of a nasolacrimal drainage system of a subject; a stimulus delivery mechanism positioned between the proximal end and the distal end; a power receptor operably coupled to the stimulus delivery mechanism; a faceplate adjacent the proximal end of the body, the power receptor being at least partially disposed within or on the faceplate; and an external controller coupled to the power receptor for transferring energy to the power receptor; wherein the faceplate abuts, and is located external to, the punctum when the body is inserted through the punctum; wherein, upon transfer of energy from an external device to the power receptor, tissue of a nasolacrimal drainage system of the subject is stimulated by the stimulus delivery mechanism to induce the production of tears. 14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the body includes an opening extending through a side wall of the body. 15. The device of claim 14 , wherein at least a portion of the stimulus delivery mechanism is positioned within the opening. 16. The device of claim 14 , wherein the body includes a plurality of openings extending through a side wall of the body. 17. The device of claim 13 , wherein the stimulus delivery mechanism includes a conductor. 18. The device of claim 17 , further including a plurality of conductors positioned between the proximal end and the distal end of the body. 19. The device of claim 13 , wherein the body and the faceplate include non-planar surfaces. 20. The device of claim 13 , wherein the body is tapered such that the proximal end has a proximal end diameter and the distal end has a distal end diameter, wherein the distal end diameter is smaller than the proximal end diameter. 21. The device of claim 13 , further including a lumen extending from the proximal end of the body to the distal end of the body. 22. The device of claim 13 , wherein the body comprises a self-expandable mesh. 23. The device of claim 13 , further including a sensor configured for sensing one or more of biochemical properties of tears, placement of the body, and operation of the stimulus delivery mechanism. 24. The device of claim 23 , wherein the sensor is configured to detect a degree of conductivity in a nasolacrimal duct of the subject. 25. The device of claim 13 , wherein the power receptor is disposed in or on the faceplate. 26. A device for inducing production of tears, comprising: a body extending from a proximal end to a distal end, wherein the body is configured for insertion through a punctum of a subject; at least two stimulus delivery mechanisms that are positioned between the proximal end and the distal end, the at least two stimulus delivery mechanisms extending at least partially around a portion of the body; wherein the at least two stimulus delivery mechanisms are axially spaced apart so that the at least two stimulus delivery mechanisms straddle an area of a canaliculus or a nasolacrimal duct where neural innervation is the greatest, as compared to the rest of the canaliculus or nasolacrimal duct, when the body is inserted through the punctum; a power receptor operably coupled to one or more of the at least two stimulus delivery mechanisms; and a faceplate adjacent the proximal end of the body, the faceplate including the power receptor at least partially disposed therein or thereon; wherein, upon transfer of energy from an external device to the power receptor, tissue of a nasolacrimal drainage system of the subject is stimulated by one or both of the stimulus delivery mechanisms to induce the production of tears. 27. The device of claim 26 , wherein the at least two stimulus delivery mechanisms are axially spaced apart at a distance sufficient to excite at least one of a supratrochlear nerve and a infratrochlear nerve when a stimulation signal is applied to a tissue of a nasolacrimal drainage system of the subject via one or both of the at least two stimulus delivery mechanisms. 28. The device of claim 26 , wherein the power receptor is disposed in or on the faceplate.
